New Passport, Old 12306 Train Ticket? What Foreign Travelers Need to Check

Quick answer · Reviewed October 12, 2026

If your China train ticket was issued under a passport you have since renewed or replaced, do not assume a newly verified 12306 passenger profile changes the paid ticket. Check the original document number on the issued reservation. Before travel, contact 12306 or a staffed railway ticket window with your current passport and old document (if retained). Ask how the specific identity mismatch can be resolved. Both passports may help staff identify you, but there is no confirmed rule guaranteeing automatic admission through a manual gate.

A railway account, a passenger record and a paid ticket are different

The official 12306 identity-verification information distinguishes account holder and passenger verification. Updating a profile does not prove an already-issued railway ticket was automatically updated.

Situation What needs checking
No ticket has been purchased yet Create or verify the passenger identity using your current valid passport.
A ticket is already paid and issued Read the passenger document number in the issued order, not only the latest saved profile.
You used a third-party seller Ask the seller which passport record the underlying railway ticket contains.
Your old passport was surrendered or lost Ask a staffed ticket office which proof of document replacement is acceptable.

The Chinese government’s official foreign visitor rail guide explains that foreigners enter railway stations and board with the original valid identity document used when purchasing. It does not guarantee that showing a photocopy or two different passport numbers always resolves a mismatch.

If you have not bought the ticket

Enter the details of the valid current document, including name and nationality as requested by 12306. Confirm whether the account holder or the passenger added to that account is awaiting verification. Do not continue buying using an expired passport record just because its status still says “verified.” Our 12306 passport-verification troubleshooting covers official photo and station-window identity routes.

A 2026 traveler question reported that a new passport could be added as a passenger while the old account document field remained locked. Reddit replies gave conflicting advice. Treat that as a useful question to verify, not a uniform app policy.

If the ticket was issued on the old passport

  1. Open the ticketed order and write down its train, date, seat, passenger name, document type and exact recorded passport number.
  2. If you retain the expired or canceled passport, bring both physical documents for staff to examine. Never use a canceled passport as though it were still valid.
  3. Contact 12306 or visit the staffed ticket office (售票窗口) ahead of departure. Ask whether staff can handle your old-to-new identity record for this particular paid ticket.
  4. If the station cannot recognize the booking, ask about an official refund or rebooking path, including current fare, seats and fees, before canceling your reservation.
  5. Leave extra time for a manual document check at the station. A document-reader failure is a separate question from how the ticket was originally issued; see foreign passport gate failure.

If the ticket came from Trip.com, obtain the railway-issued ticket details, not just the reseller’s order ID. Buying through a middleman never removes the actual railway identity-check requirement.

Why “just show both passports” is not a guarantee

The competitor Trip.com foreign-passport ticket guide suggests bringing both passports and taking a manual lane. Some travelers say it worked. That does not establish an official automatic approval rule for a lost, canceled or replaced passport. CTD recommends getting a specific railway service answer first.

If staff say you must replace the ticket, compare the price of available seats and applicable refund terms. Our 12306 refunds guide covers timing, and our missed-train guide is for after departure, not identity correction.

I bought this issued train ticket using my previous passport number. I now have a replacement passport. Please check whether the specific issued ticket remains usable and, if not, the official refund or new-ticket process.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new 12306 account contain old tickets?

Do not assume tickets migrate between separate accounts. Ask 12306 or the ticket issuer using the order and booked identity.

Will a printed itinerary fix the name or passport mismatch?

No. An itinerary printout does not change the railway’s real-name ticket record.

Can I change the passport number after the ticket is issued?

That depends on the booking’s official handling; do not claim the app can edit a paid ticket just because a profile is editable.

I no longer have the previous passport. Can I board?

Ask the railway before travel about accepted replacement/loss documents. A new passport and a screenshot are not equivalent to a guaranteed ticket record correction.
