Airalo, Nomad and Holafly each publish a China-plan claim for access to services normally blocked in mainland China without a separate VPN; these are provider statements, not CTD field tests. Trip.com makes a similar claim for selected listings. Saily is different: it routes Google and Instagram through its app, and still says WhatsApp needs a VPN.

Confirm APN, roaming and the data line. Test ordinary web access and your essential apps separately. If it fails, use Wi-Fi or home roaming to contact the provider rather than repeatedly resetting all settings.

Use your home carrier's China roaming, or buy a travel eSIM?
Keep your existing number working, buy a separate data plan, or use both? You can usually decide with four checks before landing in China.
Option A · Your home SIM
Use home-carrier roaming when your current number matters
- Check the carrier's China mainland coverage, daily data limit, full-speed cap and post-cap charges — not just a generic “Asia” pass.
- Confirm incoming SMS and voice-call fees independently of mobile data. Keeping your home number does not create a Chinese +86 number.
- Ask whether the precise roaming service supports the apps you depend on; do not infer Google/WhatsApp access from roaming alone.

Compare travel eSIMs when the main goal is data
- Check eSIM compatibility, an unlocked device, plan duration, data allowance and activation rules before buying.
- Most plans listed here are data focused; never assume Chinese voice, SMS or local identity verification is included.
- Provider-level app-access claims differ. Check the exact product listing for Google, WhatsApp and other services you need.
What if you need both your home number and affordable trip data?
On phones that support two active SIM lines, keeping your home SIM enabled for essential messages while selecting a travel eSIM as the mobile-data line may be an option. Your handset, carrier and plan must all support it. Apple and Google both document separate dual-SIM choices for calls/messages and mobile data; the exact settings vary by phone and carrier.
Keep your home number for bank and account SMS without accidentally using it for trip data
- Before departure, ask your home carrier one exact question: can this line receive SMS while roaming in mainland China, and what does receiving SMS, receiving calls, and using data cost? Do not assume all three have the same roaming price.
- Keep the home line active if you depend on it for OTPs. A new +86 number does not receive verification codes that your bank still sends to the old number.
- Choose the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line. On iPhone, Apple documents choosing one line under Cellular Data; on Pixel, Google documents choosing the default SIM for mobile data separately from calls and texts.
- Prevent accidental home-line data use. Review Data Roaming and any automatic cellular-data switching option on the home line. If you do not want home-carrier data charges, do not leave a setting enabled merely because you still want the line available for SMS.
- Test the critical account before flying. Confirm that your bank/account still has the correct home number and that you have a second recovery method where the provider offers one.
- After landing, verify both outcomes separately: trip data works on the travel line, and the home line remains registered for the messages you actually need. If the home line shows no service, use your carrier's roaming support rather than changing account phone numbers impulsively.
Important: CTD cannot tell you that incoming SMS is free on your specific carrier. Roaming support and charges are controlled by your home operator. This checklist is about separating the data line from the identity/OTP line, not promising a tariff.
Before departure: (1) screenshot your home roaming rates; (2) verify eSIM and dual-line support on the exact phone model; (3) confirm the travel eSIM's activation timing and app-access conditions; (4) keep the home number available if it is still your bank/account recovery number; (5) arrange a mainland SIM separately only if you need a verified local +86 function.

Common eSIM questions
Do I still need a VPN with a China travel eSIM?
Not necessarily. Airalo, Nomad and Holafly each publish a claim that their China eSIM can reach services normally blocked in mainland China without a separate VPN, and Holafly says a VPN is included. Trip.com makes a similar claim for selected listings. Saily is narrower: it says Google and Instagram work through its app’s virtual-location feature, and that WhatsApp still needs a VPN. Confirm the exact plan before relying on this.
Will a travel eSIM give me a Chinese phone number?
Do not assume it will. The reviewed travel eSIM options do not establish a reliable +86 number / SMS path. If a Chinese number matters, use the official in-person mainland SIM route.
What if my phone does not support eSIM?
Do not buy an eSIM for that device. A compatible physical SIM, pocket Wi-Fi, or another compatible device is the practical alternative.
What if my eSIM has signal but Google or WhatsApp fails?
Test basic data first. A signal does not guarantee international-app access. Recheck your exact plan’s settings and app-access wording, then contact the provider. Keep Wi-Fi or home-roaming fallback access; do not assume every China eSIM uses international routing.
