Before You Go · Purchase decision
Should you buy an iPhone in China?
Buy in China when
The exact China model matches the SIM or eSIM setup you need. The final price still works after refund fees. You accept China warranty jurisdiction.
Wait and buy at home when
You need guaranteed home-market warranty handling. You need a physical nano-SIM but that model has no tray. The price gap disappears once fees and risk are counted.
The one check that decides it
Open the China model page and read its SIM and eSIM wording. Then compare that exact model with your home-market model on Apple’s own spec pages.
Never assume the lineup
As of September 20, 2026 the China store shows iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max. Their SIM setups differ from each other, so generation-era assumptions are unsafe.
01 Answer first
The short version
Buy in China when the exact model fits your SIM or eSIM situation. The price must still work after refund fees, and you accept China warranty jurisdiction. Otherwise wait and buy at home.
- Check the model first. The current China lineup mixes eSIM-only and nano-SIM models.
- Then check the store. A tax refund needs a participating store, confirmed before you buy.
- Then check the warranty trade-off. Apple allocates warranty service by region of purchase.
02 Decision
Buy in China, or wait until you are home?
Buy in China when
- You have checked the exact China model and its SIM / eSIM configuration on Apple’s own spec page.
- The price still works after the refund agency’s service fee and any card or exchange-rate cost.
- You accept that warranty and consumer rights follow the country of purchase.
- You have confirmed whether that specific store participates in the departure tax-refund scheme.
- The regional model differences you care about are acceptable to you.
Wait and buy at home when
- You need a physical nano-SIM and the China model you want has no SIM tray.
- Easy warranty handling at home matters more to you than the price difference.
- Your home price after local tax and promotions is similar or lower.
- You cannot confirm tax-refund participation for the store you would buy from.
- You need a band or configuration that the China-market model does not carry.
03 Price
How to compare the price properly
The list-price gap is not the answer. The answer is what each route costs you in the end.
China cost − any refund you are actually eligible for + fees and FX vs home cost + local tax − local promotions
- Take the current Apple China list price for the exact storage tier you want. Apple China renders prices on the page, so read them live rather than from any article, including this one.
- Subtract a refund only if you are eligible for one. The published refund rate is not the cash you receive — the agency’s service fee comes off it.
- Add any card or exchange-rate cost your bank charges on a foreign purchase.
- Compare against your home price including local sales tax or VAT, minus any local promotion or carrier discount.
- Decide on the difference you actually keep, not on the list-price gap you saw first.
Prices change on Apple’s schedule and vary by storage tier. This page deliberately prints no price figure, because any number here would go stale while the method stays valid.
04 The decisive check
Exact model, SIM and eSIM
| Check this | Why it matters | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo (China store) | Sold as dual eSIM with no physical SIM tray. | Buy only if eSIM-only works for your home carrier. Do not expect to insert a nano-SIM. |
| iPhone 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max (China store) | Takes two nano-SIM cards, or nano-SIM plus eSIM, or two active eSIMs. | The flexible option for travellers who still want a physical SIM slot. |
| Your exact model identifier | Settings → General → About shows the identifier for the unit in front of you. | Compare that identifier against your home-market spec page before paying. |
SIM and eSIM configurations differ between models and change between generations. The wording above was checked on September 20, 2026. Read the spec page for the exact model you intend to buy.
05 After you leave
Warranty and service
Apple does not describe its iPhone warranty as international. Warranty responsibility follows the region or country of purchase.
| Check this | Why it matters | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Who is the warranty obligor? | Apple ties warranty responsibility to the region or country of purchase. | A China purchase carries the Apple/China warranty and China consumer-law rights. |
| Does the warranty follow you home? | Apple’s published wording allocates warranty service by purchase region. It does not promise the same service abroad. | Treat out-of-China service as possible but not guaranteed. Buy at home if certainty matters. |
| What about consumer-protection law? | Apple states its limited warranty adds to the rights you already have in your country of purchase, or of residence if different. | Your home-country rights may still apply, but arrange them before you rely on them. |
Returns, at decision level
Apple Store China returns run 14 days from delivery, in original condition with original parts, accessories, invoice and packaging. In-store return applies only to orders picked up in an Apple Store.
This is Apple direct policy. Authorised resellers, malls, marketplaces and carrier stores set their own processes, so confirm before you buy.
06 If it changes the maths
Can a departure tax refund tip the decision?
- The purchase must be made at a participating departure tax-refund store. Participation is per store, never automatic for a brand.
- Do not assume any particular Apple Store participates. Confirm the specific location in the official tax-refund system before you buy.
- The ¥200 same-store same-day threshold is not the constraint for an iPhone, but the same-store, same-day and unused-goods conditions still apply.
- The published refund rate is not the cash you receive — the refund agency deducts its service fee.
- The standard route allows 90 days from the invoice; the instant route uses 28 days. Departure verification happens in both.

07 Volatile
Re-verify these before you buy
- Current China lineup and storage tiers — Apple changes these on its own schedule.
- Current Apple China price for your exact model and storage tier.
- The SIM and eSIM wording on that model’s spec page.
- Warranty terms and the purchase-region obligor list.
- The Apple Store China return window.
- Whether your specific store participates in the departure tax-refund scheme.
- Departure tax-refund execution, deadlines and fees before you claim.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every China iPhone has the same SIM arrangement — the current lineup does not.
- Assuming China is always cheaper — the gap depends on model, storage, tax and fees.
- Buying before confirming that the store participates in the tax-refund scheme.
- Treating the published refund rate as the cash you will receive.
- Expecting Apple warranty service abroad to be guaranteed.
- Believing the 14-day Apple Store window applies to third-party sellers.
Common questions
Common questions
Is an iPhone cheaper in China?
Sometimes, but never universally. Compare the exact model and storage tier, then subtract only the refund you actually qualify for and add card or exchange-rate costs. The answer differs by model and by your home country.
Do China iPhones support eSIM?
It depends on the model. On September 20, 2026 the China store sold iPhone Duo as dual eSIM with no physical SIM tray. iPhone 18 Pro accepted nano-SIM and eSIM combinations. Read the spec page for the model you intend to buy.
Will my home carrier accept an eSIM on a China-bought iPhone?
That is your carrier’s rule, not Apple’s. Call your carrier with the exact model identifier and ask whether they will provision your line on it before you buy.
Can I use the Apple warranty after I leave China?
Do not count on it. Apple ties warranty responsibility to the region or country of purchase and does not promise identical service abroad. If home-country service certainty matters, buy at home.
Can I claim a departure tax refund on an iPhone?
Only if you buy from a participating tax-refund store and keep the goods unused until you leave. Confirm that specific store first, and treat the published rate as reduced by the agency’s service fee.
Does every Apple Store in China offer tax refunds?
No. Participation is registered per store, not per brand. Check the store in the official tax-refund system before you buy, because the refund cannot be arranged afterwards.
