China 30-Day Visa-Free Re-Entry from Hong Kong: Can You Enter Again in 2026?

Quick answer · MFA and NIA rule checked October 11, 2026

For someone who actually qualifies for China's 30-day unilateral visa-free policy, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the policy can be used for multiple entries and currently imposes no fixed minimum interval, entry-count ceiling or total-days cap. Exiting mainland China for Hong Kong and returning may therefore qualify as a new visa-free entry. But a second arrival requires its own valid eligibility, ordinary passport, permitted purpose and border inspection. A one-day “visa run” is not a guaranteed right to admission.

Two entries, not one automatic extension

Mainland China → Hong Kong → Mainland China
Step 1

First mainland entry

Check 30-day visa-free eligibility and count from the following calendar day.

Step 2

Genuine exit to Hong Kong

Finish mainland exit formalities; Hong Kong has its own separate entry rules.

Step 3

Second mainland inspection

Present a new eligible trip; approval is decided again at the border.

What the Chinese government actually says about repeated entries

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ current unilateral visa-free FAQ explicitly answers whether a visitor can make multiple entries or must wait between them: eligible travelers may enter several times; the published measure currently does not impose a total number of entries, accumulated stay limit or minimum gap. The National Immigration Administration’s official policy explanation repeats the same point.

That is stronger evidence than forum advice saying “you must wait X days.” It does not mean everyone can cross the border repeatedly without questions: the official policy only applies to an eligible ordinary-passport nationality and permissible purpose (tourism, business, visiting relatives/friends, exchanges or transit) within the valid period of the measure. Working without the proper authorization is not a valid tourism-purpose shortcut.

Do not confuse this with: a mainland tourist visa that has a single-entry condition, a bilateral arrangement with a different time allowance, an APEC travel card, a Chinese residence permit or a 240-hour visa-free transit. Those are separate bases of entry.

Eligibility first: passport, nationality and exact travel date

The policy is nationality-specific and its country list can change. For the MFA FAQ version available in October 2026, many eligible ordinary-passport nationalities receive visits of up to 30 days, with different policy-end dates depending on the nationality. Do not rely on a nationality example from an older blog: the 2024 and 2026 country lists are not identical.

Before planning a second crossing, check all of these:

  1. Your nationality and ordinary passport are eligible on both intended entry dates; your passport remains valid and has space for the usual inspection documents.
  2. Your planned activity is included in the visa-free purpose and the second stay is legitimately short-term.
  3. Your first mainland stay does not overrun its own allowed period before you exit.
  4. You can enter Hong Kong under the Hong Kong SAR’s rules, which are different from mainland entry policy.
  5. You have a credible itinerary, accommodation contact, and any departure/onward evidence immigration or your airline reasonably requests. Avoid booking fake onward tickets.

Does a new 30-day period begin after re-entry?

The MFA FAQ says a qualifying 30-day visa-free stay is counted from the day after entry, for 30 calendar days. A fresh admitted entry is evaluated on its own, not an invisible extension applied to the prior stamp.

Itinerary stage (illustration, not an approval) Check
October 5 — first mainland entry If eligible and admitted, first 30-day count starts October 6
October 25 — leave mainland for Hong Kong First stay ends on that exit; ensure you have actually completed mainland exit formalities
October 28 — enter mainland again This is a new entry request, not an extension of the first one
October 29 onward If a second 30-day visa-free entry is granted under the applicable policy, count its calendar-day period from October 29

A connection that remains on the mainland side of a terminal, or a stop in another mainland city, is not automatically an exit. Hong Kong is a separate immigration jurisdiction. Keep evidence of the actual departure and second itinerary.

Do I need to stay in Hong Kong for a minimum number of days?

The MFA FAQ says there is currently no fixed minimum interval for this unilateral policy. Do not infer that a 24-hour hotel stay is a statutory condition. Equally, repeated same-day turnarounds with no convincing visitor purpose may invite more scrutiny; the official absence of a fixed interval does not guarantee the immigration officer’s decision.

If you are planning a very long overall residence using consecutive tourist admissions, get case-specific advice from the relevant Chinese immigration authority instead of treating this as long-term residency.

30-day visa-free re-entry versus 240-hour transit twice

These regimes are frequently mixed up in searches:

Question 30-day unilateral visa-free 240-hour visa-free transit
Primary qualification Passport nationality + permitted visit purpose Eligible nationality + qualifying transit route and onward ticket to another country/region
Stay window Up to 30 days per approved eligible entry Up to 240 hours under applicable transit rules
Must go from country/region A → China → different B? Not as a general condition of unilateral visit exemption Yes: qualifying third-country/region transit required
Can you make another entry? MFA says repeat visa-free entries can qualify Each subsequent transit must be independently valid; check route and ports

For instance, London → Beijing → Hong Kong → Shanghai → London may involve two unilateral 30-day admissions for an eligible passport without relying on the 240-hour A–China–B condition. But if you are relying specifically on 240-hour transit, the route and onward-ticket tests matter. Do not switch between the two systems silently at airline check-in.

What to show at the airline counter or immigration checkpoint

Prepare a simple document set: original passport, both travel segments (especially proof you really exited the mainland), hotel addresses, dates, permitted visit purpose, and a copy of the official MFA repeated-entry FAQ.

I hold an ordinary passport eligible under China’s 30-day unilateral visa-free measure. I previously exited mainland China and am asking to enter again as a tourist. The MFA FAQ permits multiple qualifying entries and currently sets no fixed waiting interval. Please check eligibility for this particular itinerary.

The official FAQ is evidence, not a promise your individual immigration admission will be granted.

What if the first stay is about to expire?

Leave before the end of your lawful stay, or request an appropriate extension/stay permit from the competent authority when you have qualifying grounds. A quick journey to Hong Kong cannot retroactively cure an overstay and should not be represented as a guaranteed substitute for lawful status.

Frequently asked questions

Is visiting Hong Kong enough to “reset” a 30-day China visa-free stay?

A genuine exit and new approved mainland entry can trigger a new qualifying visa-free stay. But no automatic extension is granted merely because you visited Hong Kong.

Does China require 30 days outside the country before another visa-free entry?

The current MFA FAQ states no fixed minimum interval under the unilateral measure. Passport eligibility and border examination still apply.

Can I enter multiple times if my passport is not on the unilateral waiver list?

Not using this policy. Check any applicable bilateral waiver, visa, residence permit or other distinct authorization instead.

Does this cover 240-hour visa-free transit entries?

No. Transit uses a different legal test, including qualified ports and third-country/region routing.

Does entering Hong Kong itself require a visa?

Hong Kong sets its own visa/entry rules. Check those for your nationality separately; mainland China’s waiver does not determine Hong Kong admission.
