China Airline Online Check-In Not Working? Foreign Passport & Airport Counter Fallback
Online check-in failure does not automatically mean your ticket is invalid or that foreign passports are unsupported. Chinese airlines publish route, passenger and document conditions that can force airport check-in.
Quick answer: If your ticket is issued but online check-in fails, first separate ticket validity from online-check-in eligibility. Air China, China Eastern and China Southern all publish routes/passenger categories that may not support online check-in. A valid foreign passport can still be checked at the airport counter; the passport/details must match the booking and any required travel documents must be presented there.

Confirm the e-ticket number / booking reference in the airline's official Manage Booking channel. If a third party sold the trip, distinguish “reservation created” from “ticket issued.” Once issuance is confirmed, retry retrieval with the exact surname/document format used in the booking.
Use the airport route.Online check-in is not universal. Airlines publish designated-airport/flight eligibility. If the flight is excluded, take the original passport and travel documents to the airport counter; do not assume the ticket is invalid.
Do not casually change the document number. The airport check-in document must match the reservation/ticket and immigration requirements. If the passport number/name is wrong in the ticket record, solve the document mismatch with the airline or issuing agent before relying on airport automation.
Counter check-in may be required by itinerary design.Air China publishes certain international connecting routes where online check-in is unavailable and physical counter check-in is required. Through-check baggage, document checks and partner-airline segments can also affect availability.
Go to the staffed counter.China Eastern and China Southern publish exclusions for passengers who need special services or additional document review. Airport counter staff can verify the passport, visa/transit basis and service request.
Why the same passport may work on one flight but not another
| Airline | What official rules say about online check-in | Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Air China | Availability depends on itinerary/timing; some international connecting routes are excluded | Official airport counter; self-service kiosk on eligible flights |
| China Eastern | Online check-in is limited to designated airports/flights; special-service passengers must report to airport counter | Airport counter |
| China Southern | Route/passenger exclusions apply; passengers requiring additional certificates or services must use counter | Airport counter |
| Other Chinese airlines | Do not copy the Big Three's exact windows/eligibility | Use that airline's official check-in page or airport counter |

Passport and ticket details must agree
- Passenger name should match the airline's accepted booking format and your passport identity.
- Passport number/document type should match the record used for the ticket where required.
- For international travel, carry visas, transit evidence or onward tickets required for the destination/connection.
- If you renewed/replaced the passport after booking, contact the airline/agent rather than assuming the kiosk will resolve it.
- Do not create a second booking just because online check-in could not retrieve the first one.
Airport fallback: kiosk or staffed counter?
| Your state | Best next move |
|---|---|
| Ticket issued, simple eligible flight, online site glitch | Try official airport self-service kiosk if the airline/airport supports it |
| Passport scan / booking retrieval works at kiosk | Complete self-service check-in and baggage step as instructed |
| Passport/document mismatch | Go to staffed airline counter |
| International/connecting itinerary with document checks | Use staffed counter if online/self-service is unavailable |
| Special assistance / special passenger category | Use staffed counter |

My ticket has been issued, but I cannot complete online check-in. This is the foreign passport used for the booking and my reservation number. Please confirm the ticket is valid and check me in at the counter.
When to stop troubleshooting the app
If departure is getting close, protecting the flight is more important than proving the app should work. Once you have confirmed the ticket is issued, take the passport and required travel documents to the airport. Use the operating airline's airport check-in deadline, not a generic internet recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Do Chinese airlines reject foreign passports for online check-in?
No universal rule says that. Online check-in depends on airline, airport, route, document and passenger category. Foreign-passport travelers can be checked at airport counters when online check-in is unavailable.
Does online check-in failure mean my ticket is invalid?
No. Verify the ticket is issued separately. A valid issued ticket can still require airport counter check-in.
Can I just enter another passport number to make the app work?
No. Travel documents must match the booking and immigration requirements. Fix an actual mismatch through the airline/issuing agent.
