Paid for a China train journey, but cannot find your carriage or seat? Open the actual booking before buying another ticket. A receipt, a pending reservation and an issued ticket tell you different things.

For domestic journeys in mainland China, start with the platform you used: 12306 or Trip.com. Check the ticket status and each passenger's details, then follow the matching situation below.

Key Takeaways

  • Check the live order, not just a payment receipt or PDF attachment.
  • A paid waitlist request is not yet an issued ticket.
  • “No seat” or 无座 means a standing ticket, rather than a missing seat assignment.
  • For an issued railway e-ticket, bring the original passport used for booking.

First, Identify What You Are Looking At

Use this table to choose your next step. A missing number alone does not identify the problem.

What you see What to check Next step
A receipt or PDF with no seat The booking and ticket-issued notification Find the passenger's carriage and seat in the issued-ticket details
Pending, advance reservation or waitlist Whether a ticket has actually been issued Follow the order's status and deadline; do not treat the request as a boarding ticket
An issued ticket marked “No seat” or 无座 The ticket's seat category Decide whether standing is suitable or look for an available seated alternative
An issued seated ticket with no visible assignment The correct passenger, journey and latest order Ask the booking provider to confirm the carriage and seat

Find Your Seat in the Booking

If You Booked on 12306

Sign in to the account that purchased the ticket. On the 12306 English website, open My 12306 → Order center → Upcoming trips.

Search using the departure date, train number or order number. The order table includes Passenger Information, Seat Information and Status. Check the relevant passenger and train, especially if you booked several people or changed your journey.

If the trip is absent, check the date filters and account first. Look under Uncompleted orders for an unfinished transaction. The official page says overdue payment cancels the order; use the deadline displayed for yours.

If You Booked on Trip.com

Open My Bookings, select the train booking and view its details. Trip.com's current China train guidance says the seat number appears in the app under your booking.

Compare the order with the ticket-issued email, including each passenger's carriage and seat. If a PDF only shows the itinerary or booking number, check the email body and live order too. One traveler reported exactly that mismatch: the email contained the seat assignment, while the attachment did not. That is a reason to check both, rather than assume the purchase failed.

Keep the platform's booking reference available if you need support.

Paid, Pending or Waitlisted: Has a Ticket Been Issued?

Check the status before interpreting an empty seat field. Trip.com offers advance reservations before tickets go on sale, so an early request does not establish that a railway ticket has already been issued. If your order is pending, use its displayed instructions and contact support when the stated processing time passes or departure is approaching.

On 12306, 候补 means waitlist. The official waitlist FAQ explains that prepayment activates the request; a paid ticket order is generated when it is fulfilled. Follow the waitlist order's result and chosen cutoff time. Prepayment alone is not a confirmed place on the train.

If waiting no longer fits your plans, review the cancellation options for that request before arranging an alternative. 12306 says an unfulfilled request that ends is refunded to the original payment method. Trip.com requests have their own displayed terms; do not apply 12306's process to an agent's order.

If money left your account but the booking still appears unfinished, ask the provider to reconcile that order and payment. Avoid making another payment simply to reveal a seat number.

Does “No Seat” Mean Something Went Wrong?

无座 means no assigned seat. It is a standing-ticket category, not a promise that a seat number will appear later. Beijing's railway booking FAQ identifies 无座 in the seat-number field as a no-seat ticket.

If you need a seat for the journey, check availability on other departures or in another class. Review the change or cancellation conditions before confirming anything. An empty-looking carriage is not an assigned seat on your ticket.

Use our China high-speed train seat-class chooser if you need to compare Second, First and Business Class. It helps choose a class for your journey; it cannot retrieve an order or allocate a seat.

Can You Board Without a Printed Ticket or QR Code?

For an issued railway e-ticket, 12306's English FAQ says to retain the journey information and use the valid identity document linked to the ticket for station entry, exit and boarding. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding ticket.

Bring the original passport used for the booking. Shanghai's official train guide, updated June 11, 2026, explains that passengers can use their passport at supported gates or present it at manual ticket inspection. If the machine does not read yours, use the staffed channel.

This applies to an issued ticket. A passport does not turn a pending reservation into permission to board. Resolve an uncertain order before joining the departure queue.

If Your Issued Ticket Still Has No Visible Seat

For a Trip.com booking, open Customer support, find the booking and use chat or the listed calling option. For a direct 12306 booking, use the contact option on the official English site or take your original passport and order details to the station ticket window.

Ask a specific question so staff can check the assignment:

“Please confirm whether my ticket has been issued, and tell me the carriage and seat for this passenger.”

请确认这位乘客的车票是否已出票,并告知车厢号和座位号。

Have the train number, departure date, exact stations, passenger name and booking reference ready. Show any successful-payment record if the order status conflicts with it. Share passport details only through the provider's secure support channel or with railway staff.

Before leaving for the station, save the resolved journey details on your phone. A screenshot helps you find your carriage and explain a problem; keep your original passport with you too.

Frequently Asked Questions

My email has a seat number, but the PDF does not. Do I need to buy again?

Check that the live booking confirms the same passenger, date and train. A receipt attachment missing the assignment is not, by itself, a reason to repurchase.

Will a waitlisted booking get a seat number later?

Only a fulfilled request becomes a ticket. Check the result in the order; a waitlist payment does not guarantee success.

Does requesting a window seat guarantee one?

Trip.com says the railway controls allocation and preferences cannot be guaranteed. Read the final assignment rather than relying on the preference you selected.

Where do I find a sleeper berth?

Check the passenger's seat or berth information in the issued order. If that field is missing, ask the provider to confirm the assignment before travel.
