Which Apps Should I Install Before Visiting China?

You do not need 15 apps. Build a small stack around payments, maps, communication, bookings and offline translation — then add only what your trip calls for.

Quick answer. Start with Alipay, WeChat, AMap Global, Trip.com and an offline-ready translator. Taking a train? Compare official 12306 with Trip.com. Need rides? DiDi can also be reached through supported wallet entry points.

01 · Start with the essentials

The five decisions to make before you fly

Not every visitor needs the same app count. These five cover the most common jobs for a first trip, while allowing the official railway app and niche local apps to stay optional.

AL

Alipay

Everyday payments. Most first-time visitors who want one payment app to set up first.

WE

WeChat

Messages and mini programs. Visitors who will talk to Chinese contacts or need venue-specific WeChat mini programs.

AM

AMap Global

Local maps & transit. Visitors doing multi-city trips and looking for a locally focused map.

TR

Trip.com

Hotels, rail & flights. Visitors who want international checkout and customer support for multi-city bookings.

GO

Google Translate

Language, menus & signs. Anyone who cannot read Chinese fluently and needs a backup when mobile data drops.

Downloaded ≠ ready to use.

Test the login, payment card, offline language pack, saved Chinese hotel address and at least one booking flow while you still have a dependable connection.

Some recommendations overlap because one app can serve several travel tasks. Optional apps are added only where useful.

12 app profiles with a reason to install — or skip

Each profile answers what it solves, who needs it, setup constraints, the first test to perform and what to do if the app fails. Main tasks come before installation instructions.

Money & communication

Pay and reach people. A working payment method is not the same thing as a downloaded app.

AL
Everyday payments

Alipay 支付宝

Start here

Pay at merchants and unlock many transport and local-service mini programs.

Best for Most first-time visitors who want one payment app to set up first.
LanguageEnglish core interface; mini programs vary
Foreign visitor setupOverseas number supported; card approval varies
Before you fly

Register with your own overseas number, link an eligible card, follow any ID prompts, and make a small real merchant test payment.

Where it can fail

A linked foreign bank card is not proof every merchant or payment flow will accept it. Keep a second payment method.

Fallback: Try a separate payment method, a merchant POS terminal if offered, or RMB cash. Do not blindly retry pending charges.

WE
Messages and mini programs

WeChat 微信

Start here

Contact hotels, guides and local businesses, and use Weixin Pay where supported.

Best for Visitors who will talk to Chinese contacts or need venue-specific WeChat mini programs.
LanguageEnglish app interface; embedded services vary
Foreign visitor setupOverseas number supported; additional identity/security checks possible
Before you fly

Create the account early, complete verification if requested, and test messaging a trusted contact before departure.

Where it can fail

WeChat registration, Weixin Pay and each mini program are separate access checks.

Fallback: Use a direct phone number or an alternative provider channel when an in-app service is unavailable.

Maps & getting around

Use a local map for streets and transit; add a dedicated ride app when the route calls for it.

AM
Local maps & transit

Best for Visitors doing multi-city trips and looking for a locally focused map.

Foreign visitor setupCore navigation may be used without linking a card
Before you fly

Search your first hotel, station and one attraction; save their Chinese-language names and route screenshots.

Where it can fail

Place names and added services may still be Chinese; confirm saved hotel locations in Chinese.

Fallback: Ask accommodation staff to check the location and carry a written Chinese address.

DI
Ride-hailing & pickup

DiDi 滴滴出行

By trip need

Book car rides with a mapped pickup point and in-app trip information.

Best for Travelers with airport pickups, heavy luggage or late-night transfers.

Foreign visitor setupForeign numbers and eligible international cards supported; actual SMS/bank approval may differ
Before you fly

Confirm login with your number and set one route. Learn the car plate and pickup-location confirmation screen.

Where it can fail

Having an app does not guarantee the driver can find your pickup pin in a multi-level station.

Fallback: Try the DiDi mini-program through an eligible wallet, a licensed taxi queue or official airport transfer.

AP
iPhone map backup

Apple Maps 苹果地图

A familiar map and transit interface for iPhone users, useful alongside local navigation.

ME
Food delivery & local services

By trip need

Order food and explore nearby local services where your account, address and checkout are supported.

LanguageMostly Chinese; some entry points vary
Foreign visitor setupRegistration, address and payment may each be separate obstacles
Before you fly

Ask your hotel for its address in Chinese and whether staff can receive a delivery.

Where it can fail

Do not assume a hotel will accept deliveries to the room or that every merchant supports foreign-linked cards.

Fallback: Order in person or use a restaurant with a staffed cashier.

DI
Local restaurant discovery

Dianping 大众点评

By trip need

Search local restaurants, browse photos and inspect dining options around a neighborhood.

Best for Travelers seeking Chinese-language local reviews rather than just English tourist directories.
LanguageMuch of the interface and user content is Chinese

Search your hotel neighborhood and save a restaurant name and address in Chinese.

Where it can fail

Review posts may be hard to interpret, and some local-deal purchases have extra prerequisites.

Fallback: Use Amap place search and translation for menus, then pay at a staffed cashier.

PL
Chinese dictionary & reading

Pleco 汉语词典

By trip need

Look up Chinese characters and words; selected OCR and dictionary functions can support reading menus and signs.

LanguageEnglish learning / Chinese dictionary interface

Before you fly

Search one Chinese food term or copy your hotel name into the dictionary.

Where it can fail

Some dictionaries, OCR tools or add-ons may be paid; check the features you need before arrival.

Fallback: Use an offline translator or ask the hotel to write the message in Chinese.

05 · Make it work in the real world

Two checklists: before departure and when an app fails

At home: six real checks

  1. Connectivity: decide how you will obtain data and keep your home-number bank/SMS approvals reachable.
  2. Payment: register one primary wallet, link an eligible card and test a merchant purchase if feasible.
  3. Map: search and save your first hotel, station and a nearby landmark in Chinese.
  4. Tickets: put your name and passport details into your chosen booking route exactly as required.
  5. Language: download both translation languages and test offline mode.
  6. Backup: save a Chinese address card and carry an alternative legitimate payment route.

In China: fallback by failed task

  • QR payment rejected: check transaction status, then try eligible card/POS or RMB cash; do not duplicate pending charges.
  • Taxi pickup misses you: compare the pickup pin with the physical exit and use licensed taxi lines when necessary.
  • Train identity pending: use the official passport review or station-counter process; an intermediary is not an identity bypass.
  • Place missing from map: ask hotel staff for a Chinese-language name and cross-check a second map.
  • QR menu inaccessible: ask staff for a paper menu, staff ordering or a staffed checkout.
  • Translation stops: switch to downloaded languages and show saved Chinese address text.
06 · Reader questions

Common questions about apps in China

Can I travel in China without a Chinese phone number?

Many core visitor services allow overseas numbers, including government-documented payment-wallet registration and the foreign-number DiDi route. But registration, SMS delivery, bank authorization, individual mini programs and delivery features can still have separate restrictions. Prepare the exact services you need, rather than assuming one number works everywhere.

Do I need both Alipay and WeChat Pay?

One fully working wallet can cover many day-to-day payments. WeChat still has separate value for messages, official accounts and certain mini programs. Keep a bank-card or RMB-cash backup even if two apps are installed.

Is Google Maps enough for China?

Do not rely on a single international map for mainland routing. Amap Global has China-focused routing and language features; iPhone users can also cross-check Apple Maps. Save Chinese destination names before leaving.

Should I use 12306 or Trip.com for trains?

Choose official 12306 if you can complete real-name verification and manage the booking yourself. Trip.com may suit travelers who prioritize familiar international checkout and intermediary support. Review displayed charges, passport details and the actual ticket issuance state.

Can I use Google Translate without internet in China?

You can download supported language packs in advance, then use supported offline features. Do not assume every online feature will work on a China-local network; test airplane mode before departure.

Which food apps should a short-stay tourist skip?

Meituan and Dianping are useful for some visitors, but mostly Chinese-language browsing, address requirements and checkout barriers make them optional for a first short trip. Start with nearby restaurant discovery and staffed ordering if you do not need delivery.

07 · Continue with a real task

Turn your app choice into the next step

A general app list should connect visitors to the exact task they need to complete, not leave them with installation instructions and no recovery plan.
