China Food Delivery for Foreign Tourists: Hotel Address, Phone & Payment (2026)

The hard part is usually not choosing a restaurant. It is making four records agree: the delivery address, a reachable contact, the payment method and the place where the rider can hand over the food.

Quick route for a short-stay visitor

Shanghai's official 2026 visitor guide documents food-delivery use through Taobao Flash Shopping (淘宝闪购): choose a restaurant, enter a detailed address plus contact name and phone number, choose a payment method, and leave notes for the restaurant or rider. That gives us a current official baseline for the task — but it does not state that every overseas phone number is accepted by every delivery account screen.

Working Alipay / international-card paymentTry the delivery service available through the current Alipay/Taobao ecosystem or the official Taobao Flash Shopping route shown in the Shanghai guide.Use another supported delivery route or order directly from a restaurant/hotel; do not create a fake +86 identity.
A working +86 lineYou can use it where a delivery service genuinely requires domestic SMS or a rider callback.Still keep the hotel/address handoff correct; a local number does not fix a wrong entrance.
Only an overseas numberTry the country-code option actually offered by the service. Trip.com's current 2026 guide reports overseas-number use but also notes SMS/rider-call reliability can vary.If the service rejects the number, switch route or ask the hotel for help. Do not enter a random Chinese number.
No usable delivery app at allAsk the hotel/front desk whether it can help place an order or recommend a restaurant with direct ordering.Eat in person; delivery is optional, not a reason to block the rest of the trip.

Before ordering: ask the hotel two questions

  1. Where do food-delivery riders actually stop? Lobby, outside gate, delivery shelf, robot station or another entrance?
  2. Can the hotel help if the rider cannot reach you? If you want to use the hotel's phone number as a delivery contact, ask permission first. Do not assume every hotel wants its front desk number entered into third-party delivery accounts.

Save the property's exact Chinese name and address. If the hotel has multiple towers or entrances, ask for the delivery entrance rather than copying only the English booking address.

Build the delivery address in the order the rider needs it

The Shanghai government guide tells users to enter a detailed address including road, building and floor/flat number. For a visitor hotel, use the same principle:

  1. Province / city / district when the form asks for it.
  2. Chinese hotel name + street address. Copy it from the hotel's official listing, booking confirmation or front desk.
  3. Correct entrance / building. Large hotels and compounds may have more than one gate.
  4. Collection instruction. Lobby/front desk/delivery shelf if the hotel requires it.
  5. Your booking/guest name where useful. Do not expose passport numbers in an ordinary delivery note.

Hotel handoff note: 我是住店客人。请送到酒店前台/外卖柜。如有问题请先发信息,谢谢。

I am a hotel guest. Please deliver to the front desk / delivery shelf. If there is a problem, please message first. Thank you.

Before submitting, compare the delivery pin with your verified hotel POI. See the Amap place-verification workflow.

If the app asks for a phone number or SMS code

The official Shanghai delivery guide confirms that a contact phone number is part of the address/order flow; it does not publish a blanket rule that all overseas numbers work. Treat phone-account registration and rider contact as two separate checks.

Your overseas number is accepted and SMS arrivesThe account step works for this service/account.Continue, but still decide how the rider should contact you at delivery.
The form only accepts +86This particular route expects a mainland number.Try another official access route or use a mainland SIM only if delivery matters enough. See the +86 decision router.
Country code exists but SMS never arrivesCould be the platform, carrier or anti-abuse control.Stop repeated retries; use another route/support channel. A random SMS-rental number creates account-recovery risk.
Rider cannot call an overseas numberOrdering may work while last-meter contact fails.Use in-app messaging where available, give a clear drop-off note, or ask the hotel whether it will act as the contact.

Plan the last 50 meters: where will the rider leave the food?

Hotels can restrict rider access even when the address is correct. Put the agreed collection point in the order note and watch the delivery status near arrival.

请放酒店前台/外卖柜,谢谢。到达后请发信息。

Please leave it at the hotel front desk / delivery shelf. Please message when you arrive. Thank you.

If staff tell you riders cannot enter the lobby, ask for the gate or collection point in Chinese and update the note before the rider arrives.

Food-delivery failure tree

What failed?Do this next
Cannot register / receive SMSTry the supported overseas-number route once; if it fails, switch service/access path or use +86 only when the exact task justifies it.
Cannot find hotel addressGet the Chinese address from the hotel, verify the POI/pin, and ask for the rider entrance.
Menu is Chinese onlyUse translation/photos; for allergies/vegetarian needs use a dedicated Chinese requirement card rather than guessing.
Payment failsUse the actual error, wallet support or another legitimate method; do not transfer money to an unknown personal QR code.
Order paid but restaurant/rider status is unclearDo not place a duplicate order until the platform confirms the first order status.
Rider cannot find youSend the collection point in Chinese, watch in-app messages, and ask hotel staff for help if they agreed to assist.
Order is wrong / missing / cancelledUse the delivery platform's order record and support/refund route; keep screenshots and do not assume an instant refund.

Frequently asked questions

Do foreign tourists need a Chinese phone number for food delivery?

Not as a universal China rule. The official Shanghai guide requires a phone contact but does not state one country-code rule for all services. Some current traveler-facing services report overseas-number support, while SMS and rider callbacks can still fail. Test the exact route instead of buying +86 automatically.

Can I use my hotel's phone number?

Only if the hotel agrees. A front desk can be a useful delivery contact, but CTD does not assume the property consents to having its number used in your third-party order.

Can food be delivered to my room?

Hotel policy decides. Many properties use lobby, entrance or delivery-shelf handoff. Ask before ordering.

What if I cannot read the menu?

Use photos and translation, but do not rely on automated translation for allergy safety. For ordinary QR/table ordering see the restaurant QR guide; for dietary restrictions use the dedicated CTD allergy/vegetarian guides.
