How long does my Edinburgh online visa review take?

The online review has no published day count, so the 30-day buffer and 3-week submission window are what you plan around.

Quick answer: No fixed review time is published. Submit at least 30 days before travel, watch your status and email, and go to the centre within 3 weeks once review passes.

When does this rule apply?

  • You are waiting for the Edinburgh centre's online review to pass: The centre does not publish a set number of days for the online review. It advises submitting online at least 30 days before travel, so build that buffer into your plan.
  • Your online review has passed and you have received the review approval email: Go to the visa centre to submit your original passport, printed Visa Application Certificate and photo within 3 weeks. Confirm your status is "Review Completed" and check the confirmation email in your registered inbox first.
  • Your status is not yet "Review Completed" or you have no approval email: Do not go to the centre to submit materials yet. Only after the online review is passed and the approval email is received can you submit at the visa centre.
  • You are applying for a diplomatic or official-purpose visa: Submit at the Consular Section of the Chinese Consulate General in Edinburgh instead of the visa centre.
  • You want express handling: Express submission is accepted 09:00-11:00 on working days, versus regular 09:00-15:00. Collection for both is 09:00-15:00 on working days, excluding weekends and holidays.

What to do

  1. Submit your application form and materials online through the visa centre website at least 30 days before travel.
  2. While waiting, log in to check your application status and respond to any request to modify the form or supplement materials.
  3. Watch your registered email for the review approval and confirm your status shows "Review Completed".
  4. Print the Visa Application Certificate and take your original passport, certificate and photo to the centre within 3 weeks of passing review.
  5. Collect your passport at the centre during working hours using the Pickup Sheet issued when you submitted your documents.

Before you commit

  • Confirm your status is "Review Completed" and you have the approval email before travelling to the centre.
  • Check that your passport has at least 6 months' validity and at least 2 blank pages.
  • Note the centre moved to 11 Rutland Square, Edinburgh, EH1 2AS from 31 August 2026, and phone lines may be disrupted during the move.
  • Pay all visa fees in person at the centre; the centre says it does not ask for payment by phone or online.

Have these ready

  • Original passport
  • Printed Visa Application Certificate
  • Photo
  • Confirmation email showing review approval
