Which China visa path applies to my trip?

A China stopover is not automatically 240-hour transit.

Quick answer: It depends on your passport, whether you are transiting to a third country, and your trip length. Check visa-free entry first, then 240-hour transit, otherwise apply for a visa.

When does this rule apply?

  • You are transiting through China to a third country or region and hold an onward ticket with a confirmed seat and departure date.: You may qualify for 240-hour visa-free transit if your passport is from one of the 57 eligible countries and you enter through a designated port.
  • You are transiting to a third country for no more than 24 hours and will not leave the restricted port area.: The 24-hour visa-free transit policy applies to nationals of all countries, provided you hold valid travel documents and confirmed onward tickets.
  • Your purpose is work, study, or news reporting.: These activities require prior approval and an appropriate visa, even if you are otherwise eligible for visa-free transit.
  • You are applying for 240-hour visa-free transit.: Your international travel document must have at least three months of validity.
  • You have been denied a visa or have a record of illegal entry, exit, residence, or employment in China within the last five years.: You are ineligible for the 240-hour visa-free transit.
