Forbidden City Sold Out? Can Foreigners Buy Tickets at the Gate in 2026?

Official rule: the Palace Museum says it does not sell same-day tickets and that all visitors should hold a real-name reservation.

What travelers are reporting in 2026: multiple foreign-passport holders have reported buying same-day tickets at the visitor-service/ticket windows near Meridian Gate (午门 / Wumen) even when the online system showed sold out.

Practical answer: do not build your Beijing itinerary around a walk-up ticket. But if you are already in Beijing, your date is sold out, and you hold a foreign passport, trying the Meridian Gate service window is a reasonable last-resort step. Treat it as possible, not guaranteed.

The 30-second plan

If your Forbidden City date is sold out:

1. If you still have at least one day: check the Palace Museum’s official English booking route first. International visitors can book with passport details; the international site also lists an official reservation email. Availability is still limited, so email is not a way around a genuinely full day.
2. If it is already the day of your visit: bring the original passport for every visitor and go early to Meridian Gate (午门).
3. Ask staff for the visitor service / ticket service window and ask whether same-day admission is available for foreign-passport visitors.
4. If staff can sell you a ticket, complete the real-name purchase with your passport.
5. If they cannot, do not waste the day arguing with the gate. Move to your backup plan.

Why the internet gives two completely different answers

The Palace Museum’s published rule is clear: no same-day tickets. Tickets are released from 20:00 Beijing time, seven days before the visit, and entry is tied to the visitor’s real-name ID. Foreign visitors use a passport or another accepted non-mainland travel document.

That is why many reliable guides say, correctly, “do not expect walk-up admission.”

But 2026 traveler reports show something else happening on the ground.

Interpretation: use walk-up only as a fallback, never as a guaranteed booking method.

This is not strong enough to override the museum’s official rule. It is strong enough to show that an operational foreign-passport fallback has existed repeatedly in 2026.

Where to go

The Forbidden City has only one visitor entrance: Meridian Gate (午门 / Wumen) on the south side.

The museum’s own visitor instructions say that people going only to the Palace Museum can approach Meridian Gate via the East or West Tongzi River roads (东/西筒子河路). You do not have to rely on entering through Tiananmen Square first.

That distinction matters if you do not have a Tiananmen Square reservation.

If you already have a Tiananmen Square reservation

Use your reserved Tiananmen entry, walk north through the square and toward Meridian Gate, then ask at the Palace Museum visitor-service/ticket area.

If you do not have a Tiananmen Square reservation

Approach Meridian Gate from the east or west side using the Tongzi River route rather than trying to enter Tiananmen Square without a reservation.

What to bring

Bring these even if you are only “trying your luck”:

• Original passport for every visitor. Do not rely on a photo of the passport.
• A working payment method. Carry more than one option if possible.
• Your planned visit date and party size written down.
• Your Tiananmen reservation record, if you have one.
• A screenshot of the Chinese name 故宫博物院 and 午门 if you do not speak Chinese.

Do not arrive with only one person’s passport and expect to buy real-name tickets for everyone else.

What time should you try?

There is no official published quota for foreign-passport same-day sales, so nobody can honestly promise a “best” time.

The safest approach is simply: go early.

The Palace Museum lists ticket-service windows at the Visitor Service Center as:

• Peak season (Apr 1–Oct 31): 08:30–16:00
• Low season (Nov 1–Mar 31): 08:30–15:30

Traveler reports show successes at different times of day, but that does not mean inventory will exist on your date. Weekends, school holidays, May Day, National Day and summer peaks are higher-risk.

If the staff says no

Do not treat a refusal as something you can solve by arguing that someone on Reddit got in yesterday.

The written rule remains advance reservation. The on-site outcome can depend on capacity and operating practice that day.

Option 1 — Ask once at the official service window

If the answer is no, accept it.

Option 2 — If your Beijing dates are flexible, move the Forbidden City

Official tickets open seven days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time. If another day in your itinerary is still bookable, moving the visit is much safer than gambling on walk-up availability twice.

Option 3 — If you still have a day before the visit, use the official international route

The Palace Museum’s international booking page accepts passport information and lists the official reservation email:

The museum says international visitors using the email route should submit each visitor’s full name, passport number and intended visit date at least one calendar day in advance. This is still subject to capacity.

Option 4 — Compare a guided visit only if admission is explicitly confirmed

A guided product can be useful when the service includes the booking process, but read the confirmation carefully. The Palace Museum states that it has not authorized third parties as ordinary ticket agents.

Do not pay a seller merely because the listing says “Forbidden City access.” Check:

• Is Palace Museum admission explicitly included?
• Is entry confirmed, or only “requested”?
• Is your passport information required?
• What happens if admission cannot be secured?
• Is the refund policy clear?

Important: a Forbidden City ticket and a Tiananmen reservation are not the same thing

The two places sit next to each other, but their booking systems are separate.

Official Tiananmen rules say that visitors holding a valid reservation for the Palace Museum and several other designated sites can use that reservation record to enter Tiananmen Square on the same day. However, a Tiananmen Square reservation does not give you a Forbidden City ticket.

If your only goal is the Palace Museum and you do not have Tiananmen access, the Palace Museum itself says you can approach Meridian Gate via the East or West Tongzi River road.

Officially: no same-day Forbidden City tickets.

Book in advance whenever you can. If you are already stuck, a same-day passport attempt at Meridian Gate is a real fallback — but it remains a fallback.
