Hanging Temple 2026: How to Book the Climb Ticket With a Foreign Passport

Quick decision · Checked October 12, 2026

From April 2026, the Hanging Temple's management authority limits access onto the wooden building to 2,475 people daily. Entrance and climbing have separate tickets. The official notice explicitly authorizes Trip.com for overseas visitors.

Two tickets: the common mistake

Hanging Temple (悬空寺) is not a single-entry sightseeing product if you want to walk up onto the elevated wooden structure. According to the Hengshan scenic-area management notice of March 15, 2026, visitors must hold both scenic-area entry (入园票) and a separate climbing admission (登临票). Paying for transport or the site gate does not automatically reserve a climb.

If your priority is climbing rather than viewing the architecture from below, secure the scarce climbing ticket first where the operator permits.

Exact 2026 climbing quotas and times

From April 1, 2026, management caps climbing tickets at 2,475 per day, subdivided into 1,200 online and 1,275 on-site tickets (the latter divided between morning and afternoon). Online sales are described as opening 07:20–21:00 and reservable for the next seven days. On-site afternoon sales begin 12:00; morning tickets are issued shortly before the park opens.

These are official published operating rules, not a promise that stock is available at a given moment. Free/special categories consume part of the published allocation.

Foreign visitor: the authorized online channel

The notice says the main online channel is the 北岳云游 (Beiyue Yuny You) mini program and specifically identifies Trip.com as the authorized booking platform for overseas visitors (境外游客). It also warns travelers about other unauthorized promoters claiming to sell climbing access.

Select the climbing ticket, check the date/time and required passport information, and then verify separately whether scenic entrance needs to be added. Do not buy a generic Hanging Temple ‘tour’ without seeing which ticket products are actually issued.

If the climb is sold out

You can still review the official option to visit the surrounding scenic area without ascending, if admission is available. For a climb-focused visit, change your date or carefully check on-site stock, knowing the queue and limited allocation can make that attempt unsuccessful. Do not pay a scalper for an alleged guaranteed slot.

Safety note: the authority advises against climbing for travelers aged 70 or above, those above 100 kg and people with certain cardiovascular, respiratory or severe vertigo risks. Those cautions are from the site operator; assess your own fitness and follow staff instructions.

A practical Datong day plan

  1. Search 悬空寺 登临票 and confirm the official or authorized overseas booking source.
  2. Match the chosen date to your transport from Datong and other nearby sights.
  3. Save both ticket types and bring the original ID or passport used for real-name inspection.
  4. If the online option fails for a foreign passport, request clarification from Trip.com or official scenic-area staff rather than substituting a Chinese ID.
  5. Treat the trip as viewing-only unless climb access is actually issued.
