Open your confirmed order on the platform that issued it. Compare the passenger name, document type and passport number with the actual passport, not a photograph of an old document. Then check the travel date, departure station, destination, train number and class separately.

Can 12306 change a passenger name after payment?
No. In the official 12306 ticket-buying FAQ, questions 10 and 11, China Railway says a passenger's name cannot be changed once the ticket has been purchased. If the passenger's identity details were entered incorrectly, the published solution is to refund the ticket and purchase a correctly identified one, subject to the refund rules.
Do not confuse this with 改签 (changing a train or journey). A new train date does not repair the wrong person's identity record. Similarly, a name that merely looks different because of spaces or word order should be checked with the railway, not guessed to be acceptable by this guide.
Refund safely without sacrificing your seat
- Look up replacement availability before canceling. If the train is sold out, there is no promise that your old seat will be held after refund.
- Check the actual refund fee and clock. Online refunds are generally subject to timing rules. The official 2026 accidental-purchase exception is narrower than a universal free cancellation.
- Use the original issuing channel. A ticket bought on 12306 should be managed in that account; ask a third-party agency about its own booking management if it issued your order.
- Book with matching passport details. Confirm the name, document number, document type and travel date before completing payment.
- Keep confirmation. Save the final 12306 order number and the electronic refund status; any refund returns under the issuing channel's stated process.

For the latter, an eligible purchase must be refunded within 30 minutes of payment and at least four hours before departure, among other channel, order and daily limits. A name-error refund is not automatically exempt from fees simply because it was a mistake.

Take the original passport and complete order details to a staffed railway service desk, or contact China Railway on 12306.
