DiDi return plan
Can you take DiDi from Beijing to Mutianyu — and get back?
Yes for the outbound trip if your app and payment setup work. The part to plan is the return. Mutianyu is outside central Beijing, so do not assume the return will feel as frictionless as ordering a car from your hotel.
- Before leaving Beijing: price the ride from your actual hotel, not from a generic “Beijing” pin.
- At drop-off: save the exact pickup point in Amap / DiDi and screenshot the Chinese place name.
- Before going onto the wall: decide your fallback — direct tourist bus, public bus, or a pre-arranged driver — if a return DiDi quote is poor or pickup is slow.
03 Once you are there
Cable car, chairlift, toboggan: how to get up the wall
Three ways up: two lift systems and the walking paths. Their tickets do not mix, and each system starts from a different gate.
The open wall runs from Tower 1 to Tower 20. The cable car lands mid-wall at Tower 14; the chairlift lands at Tower 6. Which lift you take decides which stretch of the wall you walk.
Enclosed cable car
- Runs from the north gate to the wall at Tower 14
- Book it with your admission or on its own
- A round-trip ticket returns the same way, from Tower 14
- The usual starting point for the walk to Tower 20 and the Hero's Platform
Pick it if you want the simplest ride up and plan to walk the middle of the wall.
Chairlift + toboggan
- Open chairlift up; toboggan slide back down
- Run by a separate operator — tickets are not interchangeable with the cable car
- Enter through the slide gate, not the cable-car gate
- Weather can pause it, so check on the day
Pick it if the toboggan ride down is part of your plan.
On foot
- South path climbs to Towers 6 and 8
- North path climbs to Tower 10, east of the cable-car platform
- About 1,100 steps and 40 minutes on each path
- No lift ticket needed
Pick it if you would rather climb than queue, and have the time for it.

Before you go
- Book ahead. Admission is a real-name booking — reserve with your passport up to 30 days ahead, one ticket per passport per day.
- Two gates. North gate for cable-car tickets; the slide gate for chairlift and toboggan tickets.
- Small children ride free. The shuttle and cable car are free for children 1.2 m and under; everyone taller pays full price.
- Time your day. Peak season: 07:30–18:00 on weekdays, 07:30–18:30 at weekends. Off-season: 08:00–17:30. Ticket sales end an hour before close.
- Weather can stop the rides. Lifts pause in lightning, rain, snow, fog or strong wind — check the official notice on the day.
