Can I Bring Food Into China?

What snacks, meat, dairy, fruit, seafood and baby foods can you carry through China Customs? Start with the food checker below.

Quick answer: The main question is what the food contains, not whether it is sealed or store-bought. China’s quarantine rules prohibit many categories from being carried into the country, including raw or cooked meat and meat products, milk/dairy, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds/seedlings and other listed animal/plant products unless a specific approval/certificate exception applies. Read the ingredient list before packing.

Baby food: the product name does not answer the Customs question

For formula, puree, pouches and toddler meals, check the actual ingredients and processing. Products containing restricted animal or plant items may fall into quarantine categories even if commercially sealed. Do not assume all processed products containing an ingredient are classified identically.

  1. Photograph/translate the ingredient label before travel.
  2. Remove obvious meat/dairy/egg/fresh-produce items unless you have a verified exception.
  3. Carry enough compliant food for the travel day, not an unchecked suitcase full of mixed products.
  4. If the food is medically necessary, ask Customs/consular channels before departure and keep supporting medical evidence.

Why vacuum-packed or duty-free packaging does not make prohibited food legal

The official list is category-based. A cooked sausage remains a meat product; shelf-stable milk remains dairy; a sealed fresh fruit gift remains fresh produce. Packaging can reduce contamination risk, but it does not rewrite the quarantine category.

Common mistake: “It came from an airport shop, so it must be allowed.” Airport retail and destination-country Customs rules are separate.

If you are not sure at arrival

Ask Customs

我携带了这种食品,配料包括【配料】。我不确定是否属于禁止携带的动植物产品。请问是否需要申报,或者应该在入境前丢弃?

I am carrying this food. The ingredients include [ingredients]. I am not sure whether it falls under prohibited animal/plant products. Should I declare it, or dispose of it before entry?

When in doubt, declaration/inspection is safer than concealment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring vacuum-packed jerky?

Do not rely on vacuum packaging. Meat/meat products are in the prohibited quarantine category.

What about chocolate, cookies or instant noodles?

Check the ingredients. Plain packaged snacks may be lower-risk, but complex baked products can require product-specific review. CTD does not promise that every cookie or chocolate is permitted.

Can I bring baby formula?

Milk-based infant formula can implicate dairy restrictions. Confirm the exact product with China Customs in advance; “baby food” is not an automatic exemption.
