What counts as proof of onward travel for China?

A practical 2026 check-in guide for 24-hour and 240-hour transit: confirmed tickets, electronic itineraries, printable evidence and what to ask if your airline flags a visa.

Quick answer

For China's 240-hour visa-free transit, the National Immigration Administration (NIA) requires an eligible ordinary passport, an onward ticket to a third country or region with a confirmed seat and departure date, and use of the designated entry and stay areas. For 24-hour airside transit, an onward international flight, ship or train ticket with a confirmed seat is also required. A travel plan or unpaid reservation alone is not the same as a confirmed ticket. Read the NIA's August 2026 policy ↗

01

Prove the route

Show the place immediately before mainland China and the first country or region after it. They must differ for the third-region transit route.

02

Prove the departure

Keep the actual issued booking and a clear itinerary with flight/train/ship identifier, departure date, destination and a confirmation of carriage or seat.

03

Prove your rule

Open the up-to-date NIA notice and confirm passport, entry port, destination and timing. A booking alone does not prove eligibility.

Important: This page is a document-preparation aid, not a boarding pass, visa, immigration permit or approval. Only the airline and immigration authorities can decide whether to carry or admit you. If you do not have an eligible route, find the correct entry pathway before traveling.

24-hour transit, 240-hour transit or ordinary visa-free entry?

The onward-ticket question changes with your entry pathway. Do not assume the conditions for visa-free transit apply to an ordinary visa-free stay.

Entry pathwayOnward-document ruleYour first check
24-hour airside transitNIA says valid international travel papers and international onward flight, ship or train ticket with a confirmed seat; stay inside the port's restricted area. Leaving it requires a temporary entry permit. Will you remain airside? Can you remain in the port without collecting checked baggage? Check your airline's transfer arrangement.
240-hour visa-free transitFor eligible ordinary passports, confirmed onward ticket with seat and departure date to a different country or region; designated entry port and permitted area; leave within the applicable window.Run the full CTD transit route checker and verify today's NIA eligibility list.
Ordinary unilateral/mutual visa-free entryNot the same legal basis as 24h or 240h third-country transit. Authorities and carriers may ask about return or onward travel, but do not substitute the transit document criteria.Use the ordinary China visa checker for your nationality, purpose and length of stay.

The national policy was updated on August 20, 2026, adding Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam: the NIA lists 57 eligible nationalities and 65 designated ports for 240-hour transit. Some local government pages written earlier still mention 55 countries. Prefer the newer national source for eligibility. See the NIA update ↗

Show the immediate A → mainland China → B route

Start with the international leg immediately before you enter mainland China and the first leg that takes you out. Long-distance origins, later destinations or tickets booked by separate carriers do not replace this route check.

Potential transit route
United States → Mainland China → Japan

Different international regions before and after China. This is a route example only; passport, ticket, port and stay still require confirmation.

Not a third-region transit route
United States → Mainland China → United States

Same country on both international sides. Check ordinary visa-free entry or visa requirements instead.

If the itinerary has several mainland cities, use the transit checker to review entry ports and permitted movement. If it involves Hong Kong or Macao, show the exact cross-border tickets and confirm which border crossing and documentation apply; never assume all domestic train tickets count as an international exit.

What your confirmed onward ticket should visibly show

When you hand an itinerary to check-in staff, make it easy to verify the passenger, scheduled departure, confirmed booking and onward destination without searching through dozens of email messages.

Collect these items

  • Ordinary passport and any visa or onward-destination entry permission required for the next country/region.
  • Complete incoming itinerary showing the region before mainland China.
  • Issued onward ticket or carrier itinerary with confirmed date and seat status.
  • Booking reference and document that staff can independently check with the carrier.
  • Saved electronic copy available offline and a paper backup where possible.
  • Current NIA policy link and route-check result (supporting explanation only).

A numbered aircraft seat assignment is not always shown until check-in. The NIA specifies a confirmed seat, not a particular screenshot design; do not invent missing booking proof.

Can I show an e-ticket or PDF?

An official local 2026 transit FAQ says a paper ticket may be printed at Shanghai airport or an online itinerary may be displayed. That guidance is useful for preparing your materials, but it is not a promise that every check-in desk will accept a phone screenshot alone. Save the original airline/rail/ferry confirmation, and bring a print copy if possible. Source: Chongqing government transit FAQ ↗

Make a one-page check-in evidence cover sheet

Use this browser-only cover sheet to organize the real tickets you will show staff. It never generates a ticket or submits your entries to CTD. Do not enter passport numbers or other sensitive identifiers.

If airline staff say “you need a China visa”

  1. Confirm which rule you rely on. Is it ordinary visa-free entry, 24-hour restricted-area transit, or 240-hour visa-free transit? The supporting documents differ.
  2. Show the complete A → mainland China → B booking chain. A single boarding pass showing only the flight into China will not establish onward transit.
  3. Present the current NIA policy. Use the official August 2026 page rather than an outdated 55-country screenshot. Let staff match the passport, applicable port and date.
  4. Ask for a supervisor or travel-document specialist to review. Explain that you are requesting a document check, not demanding boarding. Airline systems and individual case facts may still affect the outcome.
  5. Do not improvise false evidence. If a booking is on hold, your route is invalid, or onward-country entry permission is missing, resolve it before proceeding.
Need help understanding your actual route?

Use the China Transit Visa Checker to evaluate the itinerary you really have, including nationality, entry port, stay and onward country. It provides an additional airline check-in pack but cannot guarantee permission to board.

Common questions

Is a ticket confirmation email enough?

It can be useful evidence if it clearly establishes an issued, confirmed onward booking with the necessary details. A payment receipt or unconfirmed reservation is not equivalent. Bring access to the original booking in the carrier's official system where practical.

Does the ticket have to show a numbered airplane seat?

The national wording is a confirmed seat and a departure date. That does not prescribe a single document layout. If your confirmation lacks enough information for check-in staff to establish the booking status, ask the issuing carrier for a more detailed itinerary.

Can I use train or ship tickets?

NIA's current 24-hour transit guidance explicitly mentions international flight, ship and train tickets. Your route must still use an eligible border crossing, satisfy the applicable visa-free transit conditions and be verifiable at check-in. Never assume a domestic rail ticket proves departure from mainland China.

Can I buy an onward ticket at the airport?

Do not plan around speculative or unconfirmed reservations. The relevant transit rules require a confirmed onward itinerary; get the necessary booking and evidence before departure.

Are onward tickets required for everyone entering China visa-free?

No single answer covers ordinary visa-free entry and both transit policies. Check the entry basis that applies to your passport, purpose and itinerary. This page specifically addresses proof used for visa-free transit.
