China Train Child Tickets: Free Under-6 Declaration on 12306 (2026)

Quick answer · Official 12306 rule checked October 11, 2026

One ticketed adult may take one child younger than six free of charge only if the child does not occupy a separate seat. You must declare the free-traveling child when buying the ticket, and the child's valid identity document used in that declaration is the document for boarding. Children aged six to under 14 need a child-discount ticket; from age 14 the ordinary full-fare rule applies. These are age rules, not the old height chart.

Which 12306 child-ticket path applies?

The official age and seat rules

The China Railway 12306 child-travel FAQ and ticket purchasing instructions describe an age-based framework. Calculate the child’s age on the travel date, not the booking date.

Child on day of train travel Ticket / declaration Seat entitlement
Under 6, with one ticketed adult One free child per adult; declare in advance No independent seat; travels with accompanying adult
Under 6, wants a separate seat Purchase a child-discount ticket Seat assigned under purchased fare, subject to availability
Under 6, extra children beyond one free per adult Extra children need child-discount tickets Follow the issued ticket conditions
Age 6 to under 14 Child-discount ticket required Matched train, date and class with accompanying adult
Age 14 or older Full-fare ticket Standard passenger conditions

Foreign passports count as railway booking identity documents. The railway’s real-name ticket sales rules include foreign passports among accepted documents. Keep the original passport used to book or declare with you at the station. Do not assume a foreign parent’s passport substitutes for the child’s separate identification record.

When buying directly on the 12306 app

The specific English/Chinese labels may change with app updates. Use this as a task sequence, not a claim that the latest authenticated screens were live-tested:

  1. Add the paying adult to the passenger list (乘车人) and verify their passport data. If passport verification itself is pending, follow our 12306 passport verification guide.
  2. Find the desired train, date and class; choose the adult seat/ticket.
  3. Before the purchase is finished, look for the official free-traveling child declaration (免费乘车儿童申报) or equivalent passenger declaration control. Add the child, using the child’s valid passport details that will be available on the travel day.
  4. Verify the free-child declaration is linked to the correct adult and specific booking, not just stored as an unused passenger profile.
  5. Save the adult order and the recorded free-child details. On travel day, carry the child’s original passport and the adult booking information.

The exact declaration entry location can differ by the app/website release. If you cannot locate it, ask China Railway 12306 or the staffed station ticket office to verify the declaration before boarding. Do not guess that a checkbox was automatically applied.

What if you bought the adult tickets on Trip.com?

This is the most important difference from a generic “children under six ride free” article. In a real parent question, travelers with a seven-month-old asked whether they could buy two adult tickets on Trip.com and simply present the baby’s passport at the gate. Their checkout did not show the official free-child declaration.

The official railway requirement does not disappear because a third-party checkout omitted the option. We cannot verify that every reseller currently submits the required child declaration automatically.

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Check the third-party order and contact the booking provider. Ask whether the child was actually declared to China Railway and request an order reference or confirmation.
  2. If the reseller cannot confirm it, use the station ticket office / China Railway service channel to ask how to link the under-six child to that exact issued adult ticket. Bring all passports and the train number. Prefer doing this before your travel day if feasible.
  3. If the child needs a seat, discuss purchasing the correct child-discount ticket for the same train and class. Do not occupy another paying passenger’s seat because you assumed the baby had a free seat.
  4. If the adult ticket is still pending, first confirm the order is issued, not just paid into a standby waitlist: see 12306 waitlist paid but not ticketed.

A commenter saying they were waved through with an undeclared child is an anecdote, not a replacement for 12306’s published advance-declaration rule.

Boarding with a foreign child passport

The name, date of birth, document number and passport type on the purchase/declaration should match the actual child’s valid travel document. If a station gate cannot match the passport automatically, use the staffed check-in lane rather than editing passport data to make a machine accept it.

Keep the child physically with the accompanying adult. Under-14 independent travel has very limited railway-approved exceptions; do not plan to put a child on a train alone as a tourist. A stroller, infant seating request or mobility need may require asking staff for practical assistance without changing the ticket class.

The bilingual counter request

我是外国游客,带一名未满六岁的孩子乘车。成人票已经购买,但是第三方平台没有免费乘车儿童申报的选项。请帮我确认是否已申报,并指导如何补充申报。孩子持外国护照。

I have already bought adult tickets through a third-party platform. I am traveling with a child younger than six, but there was no free-child declaration option. Could you confirm whether the child has been declared and advise how to complete the required record? The child has a foreign passport.

Two children with one adult?

One ticketed adult may carry only one under-six child free without a separate seat. If one adult takes two toddlers, the extra child generally needs a child-discount ticket. Two ticketed adults with two under-six children can generally declare one each, provided the other conditions are met.

Age and group arrangements are counted on the travel date. The free child does not receive a seat reservation merely because an adult ticket was paid for.

Common errors to avoid

  • Using the old height rule instead of the current under-six / six-to-under-14 age rules.
  • Not entering any declaration because a third-party booking page does not ask for a child.
  • Adding the child as a profile but not associating the child with the booked journey.
  • Assuming the adult’s single issued seat covers a separate infant seat.
  • Leaving the child’s original travel document at the hotel because the child does not have a separately paid ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Do babies under six need a train ticket in China?

A single under-six child accompanying a ticketed adult can travel free without a separate seat, but must be declared when buying the adult ticket. The original identity document used in the declaration must be available for boarding.

My baby is under six. Can I use the seat next to us if empty?

The free-travel right does not reserve another seat. If you need a guaranteed separate seat, buy a child-discount ticket under applicable rules.

Can a foreign child use a passport?

Yes. Foreign passports are recognized real-name identity documents under the railway sales rules. Record the passport accurately and take the original.

Does Trip.com automatically declare a free child?

Do not assume it does. Ask the vendor or China Railway to verify the booking’s child declaration for your specific ticket.

If we forgot to declare, can we just go to the gate?

The official instructions require declaring at purchase. Contact 12306 or the staffed station ticket office and ask for a compliant correction before you travel.
