Lost Your Passport in China? Police, Embassy and Departure Steps (2026)
Quick answer · National Immigration Administration references reviewed October 12, 2026
If you lose a foreign passport while visiting China, report it to local public security authorities and contact your own embassy or consulate about a replacement or emergency travel document. Then verify with Chinese Exit-Entry Administration or border inspection whether your visa, visa-free entry record or other travel permit requires action. The departure requirements depend on **how you originally entered China and which replacement document you obtain**. Do not assume the embassy document alone guarantees boarding your original return flight.
A missing passport creates three separate tasks
Police / Exit-Entry
Get the required official loss report or certificate.
Your embassy
Confirm emergency travel document or replacement passport rules.
Immigration + airline
Confirm visa-free, visa or stay permit and boarding requirements.
Step 1: report the loss, even if you hope the passport will turn up
Check with the last station, hotel or carrier where it may have been found. If it is truly lost, go to the appropriate police station (派出所) or local Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Administration (出入境管理) and ask how to obtain the proper passport-loss certificate. Bring a passport photo/copy, previous visa, ticket or other identity evidence if you have one. Do not publish identifying details online.
The National Immigration Administration (NIA) guidance describes local loss certification and contact with the visitor’s embassy or consulate. The Chongqing government June 2026 procedure specifies a police report, embassy replacement, updated accommodation registration and subsequent immigration handling.
Report the facts accurately. Do not falsely describe a simple loss as a theft to request faster processing.
Step 2: ask your embassy or consulate for a valid replacement
Use the contact information on your own government’s official site. Explain nationality, identity, where and when the passport was lost, entry status and any imminent return flight. Ask:
- Is a temporary/emergency travel document or a full replacement passport available in your case?
- Does the consulate require a police loss certificate, photos, appointment or other proof?
- When would the document become valid, and would it be accepted by your destination country and any transit stop?
- Has your old passport been canceled, and what if someone finds it later?
Do not rely on a generic “two days” or “ten working days” timeline. Nationality, holiday office closures, identity checks and security issues change processing. A October 2, 2026 firsthand account illustrates the problem of an old passport being returned after it was invalidated during a Chinese public holiday.
Step 3: distinguish visa-free entry from an existing visa
| Your original China entry | What to verify with Chinese authorities |
|---|---|
| A visa was in the missing passport | Whether its visa needs to be officially reissued in the new document. |
| Entered on visa-free terms | Whether your specific emergency/new document and entry record satisfy the relevant visa-free departure rules. |
| Your legal stay may expire before documents arrive | Ask about a stay permit or applicable immigration procedure before expiry. |
| Your embassy cannot issue a replacement locally | Ask whether you meet the special conditions for an exit-entry permit. It is not automatic. |
NIA’s visa-free lost-document interpretation explains that officers will verify identity, entry record, loss report and consular documents; a qualifying traveler may depart if legal requirements are satisfied. NIA’s visa reissuance instructions list documents for a lost visa, while the exit-entry permit conditions cover certain unusual inability-to-replace cases.
Do not conclude that every visa-free visitor must apply for a new tourist visa, or that every emergency passport is automatically accepted.
Step 4: check lodging and already booked transport
When you get a new document, ask your hotel or local police about updating the temporary accommodation registration. Chongqing’s official guidance specifically addresses that step.
Existing train or airline tickets may still refer to the old passport number. Ask each ticket issuer how to update or validate that identity before going to the station or airport. Read new passport with an older 12306 ticket for the separate railway process.
A photograph of the missing passport is useful proof when asking for help, but is not automatically an accepted boarding document.
If your international flight is in the next 48 hours
- Report the loss and contact your embassy’s official emergency contact immediately.
- Ask which replacement or emergency document it can actually issue and when.
- Contact local Exit-Entry Administration or border inspection about your specific visa/visa-free status, entry evidence and permit needs.
- Ask the airline if that document is valid for check-in, transit and destination entry.
- Preserve police/consular case numbers and review flight-change and accommodation costs if you cannot depart.
- If your lawful stay is nearing its end, obtain official immigration guidance before it expires.
NIA guidance provides facilitation for some urgent cases, but no travel guide can guarantee an on-the-day consular replacement or immigration clearance.

I am visiting China and lost my passport. I need to report the loss, obtain the required certificate and contact my embassy for a replacement. Please confirm which immigration record, visa or visa-free procedures I need before departure.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave China with an emergency travel document?
Possibly. Your nationality, document type, original entry route and border authority’s verification all matter. Confirm with the relevant Chinese authority and airline.
Does a lost passport cancel the period of visa-free stay?
Do not assume the clock stops. Ask local Exit-Entry Administration about your remaining lawful stay and any necessary permit.
What if a lost passport is later found?
If your passport was canceled by its issuing country, physically finding it does not automatically restore validity. Confirm with your embassy.
Can I fly or board trains using only a passport photo?
Do not assume so. Ask the operator what valid original or official replacement documentation it can accept.
