National Museum of China Tickets for Foreigners: Passport Booking Without WeChat
Quick answer · Museum rules checked October 12, 2026
If the National Museum of China WeChat mini-program will not verify your foreign passport, use its official English-language reservation system, which the museum explicitly recommends to foreign passport visitors. General admission is free but requires a real-name booking. Slots open 7 days before your visit, daily at 17:00 Beijing time, and reservations are tied to the original identity document. A WeChat Pay account being verified is not proof that a museum reservation exists.

The official booking link foreigners should try first
Use the museum’s official English reservation website, reached from the museum’s English Visit page. The museum answered a June 30, 2026 public question from a foreign-passport visitor with this same English booking link. That is stronger evidence than guesses about whether all mini-program identity options support passports.
- Open the official English reservation page, not a reseller’s imitation site.
- Log in or register as instructed; the English flow may involve an email. Do not type a random mainland ID number or borrow someone else’s identity.
- Select your visit date and entry window; the page offers up to seven days of advance availability.
- Add each visitor with the correct passport and real name. Keep the original passport used when reserving.
- Confirm the booking and save the success notification. A profile or cart alone is not a reservation.
- Arrive for your reserved time slot at the North Gate visitor entrance, show the booking message and original identity document.
A visitor case documented the WeChat mini-program presenting only Chinese/other local identity types; other travelers reported the English website working, although slot availability remained difficult. A July 2026 separate foreign-passport user reported the same WeChat obstacle. These are firsthand friction reports, not proof the official English service succeeds for every person.
Booking window, account limits and no-shows
The museum’s current English rules specify:
| Rule | What it means when booking |
|---|---|
| Release | Daily at 17:00 Beijing time, for dates within the next 7 days |
| Morning slot | 09:00–11:00 |
| Midday slot | 11:00–13:30 |
| Afternoon slot | 13:30–16:00, extended to 16:30 June 1–October 31 |
| General admission | Free, but a successful real-name reservation is required |
| Account reservation limit | At most one reservation per week and up to five visitors in an order |
| Missing the slot | A late/no-show booking can be refused at entry; repeated no-shows have account consequences |
The museum is normally closed on Mondays, apart from announced exceptions. Special holiday opening notices may change usual schedules. Booking earlier than the seven-day window does not reserve a future ticket.
The museum also restricts one identity document to one visit per day and up to four reservations per month. Canceling still counts toward certain reservation limits, so do not create speculative bookings you do not intend to use.
What if the website says high traffic or sold out?
A traveler in April 2026 reported waiting at 17:00 only to encounter a high-traffic error and lose the date. A server-busy message is not a confirmed seat. Verify whether a success notice actually appeared; avoid a second parallel reservation if you already received confirmation.
- Check the official date selector at its published release time. Do not assume availability just because the page opens.
- If the date is full, consider another eligible date. Do not rely on anonymous social-media resellers asking for passport photos or payments.
- If you need to change a confirmed date, read the cancellation consequences before acting.
- For a technical account problem, the museum lists a visitor service hotline +86 10 6511 6400. Confirm hours and number on its latest official announcement rather than giving credentials to an unofficial intermediary.
Some third-party tours bundle commentary or transport with museum access. A paid tour’s price does not change the free general-admission policy, and a seller’s claim of “guaranteed entry” must be verified with the museum. Paid-exhibition products have separate rules; do not claim every paid exhibition grants general admission.
National Museum versus Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City
These are different entry decisions. A museum booking should not be presented as a universally accepted replacement for a separate Tiananmen Square security/access reservation, and it is not a Forbidden City ticket. If your plan includes multiple attractions on the same day, check each officially required admission path and the walking/security buffer.
For the other access problems, see Tiananmen Square without a Chinese phone number and Forbidden City foreign visitor tickets.

我持外国护照,无法在微信小程序中完成身份证实名认证。我已尝试中国国家博物馆官方英文预约网页。请问应该如何使用护照完成实名预约?如预约成功,需要在哪个入口核验?
I am a foreign-passport visitor and cannot pass the WeChat mini-program’s Chinese ID verification. I am trying the National Museum’s official English reservation website. Could you tell me how to reserve with my passport and where I should verify the booking for entry?
Frequently asked questions
Does verified WeChat Pay mean my National Museum ticket is reserved?
No. Wallet identity/payment verification and the museum’s ticketing identity system are separate. You need a specific successful museum booking.
Can I arrive without a reservation and show my passport?
Official museum rules say visitors without a confirmed reservation will not be admitted. An original passport is necessary identity proof, not a substitute for a booking.
Can I reserve more than seven days ahead?
The general admission window is up to seven days. Check special exhibition products separately.
Is the English site an unofficial reseller?
No. The museum links to it from its official English site and has directed foreign visitors there in public responses.
