How to Reserve Tiananmen Square Without a Chinese Phone Number (2026)

Checked September 13, 2026

Tiananmen Square is free to visit, but a real-name reservation is required.

The official Beijing 12345 guidance says the web reservation portal does not support non-Chinese phone numbers.

If you are a foreign visitor, use this order:

1. Try the official WeChat mini-program → 2. Have another person book on your behalf → 3. If you already hold a valid reservation for a designated Tiananmen-area attraction, use that record instead of making a separate square reservation.

Your path when you have no Chinese phone number

No Chinese phone number
Route A

Have WeChat

Search 天安门广场预约参观 → Personal Reservation

Route B

WeChat still fails or no WeChat

Friend / hotel / host books on your behalf with your passport details

Route C

Already have a qualifying same-day reservation

Forbidden City, National Museum, or other designated site — show that reservation at the checkpoint

The web portal itself does not support international phone-number verification.

The simplest answer

You do not need to buy a “Tiananmen ticket.” Entry to the square is free.

What you need is a reservation record tied to your identity.

The current official guidance for foreign visitors is:

  • Reservations are normally made 1–7 days in advance.
  • The website does not support international phone-number verification.
  • The recommended route is the official “Tiananmen Square Reservation” (天安门广场预约参观) WeChat mini-program.
  • If you do not have WeChat, another person can reserve for you.
  • Each reservation can include up to 7 people: up to 4 adults plus up to 3 young children under the stated age/height rule.
  • Foreign visitors should use their passport details.
  • Bring the original passport used in the reservation for the on-site identity and security check.

Route A — Use the official WeChat mini-program

In WeChat, search:

天安门广场预约参观

Choose:

Passport details

Enter name, passport number, submit

Based on the official Tiananmen Management Committee reservation guide.

Then:

  1. Read and accept the reservation notice.
  2. Choose your date and time slot.
  3. Enter each visitor’s name and passport/document number.
  4. Enter the requested phone information.
  5. Check the details carefully.
  6. Submit and save the reservation record.

Which time slot should you choose?

The reservation system uses four visit periods:

  • Flag raising
  • Morning
  • Afternoon
  • Flag lowering

If your main goal is simply to cross Tiananmen Square before visiting the Forbidden City, choose a slot that fits your Palace Museum entry time rather than automatically choosing flag raising.

Flag-raising reservations are more competitive and should be treated as a separate planning decision.

Route B — Have someone else book for you

This is the most practical fallback if:

  • you do not use WeChat,
  • the mini-program still rejects your foreign number,
  • or the reservation interface is not working for you.

The Beijing 12345 guidance explicitly says that another person may reserve on your behalf.

That can be:

  • a friend in China,
  • your hotel front desk,
  • your host,
  • or another traveler who can complete the reservation.

Give them the details exactly as shown in your passport.

A 2026 traveler reported being unable to complete the process without a Chinese number, then asking hotel reception to make the reservation. The traveler entered successfully the next day after passport verification.

Does the person who books for you have to enter with you?

Official Tiananmen reservation rules say that if the main reserver is not present or phone verification cannot be used on site, staff can verify the reservation through identity information.

That means a hotel employee or friend who helps create the booking does not need to become your sightseeing companion just to make the reservation useful.

Show this to your hotel reception

可以帮我预约天安门广场吗?我没有中国手机号。

Kěyǐ bāng wǒ yùyuē Tiān'ānmén Guǎngchǎng ma? Wǒ méiyǒu Zhōngguó shǒujī hàomǎ.

"Could you help me reserve Tiananmen Square? I don't have a Chinese phone number."

Please use the visitor's passport name and passport number exactly.

Route C — You may already have a reservation that gives you access to the square

This is the shortcut many visitors miss.

Official Tiananmen rules state that visitors who already hold valid reservations for designated Tiananmen-area attractions can show that reservation record and enter Tiananmen Square without making a separate square reservation.

The official list has included:

  • Palace Museum / Forbidden City
  • Chairman Mao Memorial Hall
  • National Museum of China
  • Great Hall of the People / other designated open sites
  • Zhongshan Park
  • Beijing Working People’s Cultural Palace

So if you already have a confirmed Forbidden City reservation for that day, check the official Tiananmen guidance before creating a second booking.

Important: this works only one way

A qualifying attraction reservation may give you access to Tiananmen Square.

A Tiananmen Square reservation does not give you a Forbidden City ticket.

Three different bookings — do not mix them up

Tiananmen Square

  • Free
  • Reservation / qualifying record required
  • Security check

Tiananmen Rostrum / Tower

  • Separate attraction
  • Separate booking

Forbidden City / Palace Museum

  • Paid admission
  • Separate real-name ticket
  • Passport tied to ticket

Do not buy or reserve the wrong "Tiananmen" product.

What if the mini-program asks for a phone number anyway?

Do not keep retrying random number formats.

Use this decision sequence:

1. Confirm you are in the correct mini-program

You want 天安门广场预约参观 — the Tiananmen Square reservation service.

Do not confuse it with the Tiananmen Rostrum/tower booking system.

2. Try the official mini-program route

Beijing 12345 specifically recommends the WeChat mini-program because the web portal does not support international phone-number verification.

3. If WeChat reports a phone-number mismatch

Some 2026 traveler reports describe the mini-program opening normally but returning a phone-number mismatch. Treat that as a traveler-reported problem, not a documented rule.

If it happens:

  • Confirm you entered the international dialing code exactly as the form expects — not several formats in a row.
  • Retry only with the correct account or device, and only when there is a real reason to. Do not cycle through random accounts, devices, or numbers.
  • If it still fails, stop repeating the attempt and use a proxy booking.

4. If your number still cannot be accepted, stop troubleshooting and use a proxy booking

Have a friend, hotel or host create the reservation with your real passport details.

This is officially allowed and is usually faster than trying to force a foreign number into a field that is not designed for it.

What if the name or passport number is wrong?

Do not assume staff will correct a wrong passport number at the security checkpoint.

The official system is real-name based.

If you spot a mistake after booking, the safest action is:

  1. Open the reservation record.
  2. Cancel the incorrect reservation.
  3. Rebook with the passport details exactly as printed.

Official Tiananmen rules allow cancellation through the reservation record. They also limit repeated cancellations, so check the details carefully before submitting again.

If you are visiting Tiananmen and the Forbidden City on the same day

This is the cleanest order for most first-time visitors:

Tiananmen Square → walk north → Meridian Gate → Forbidden City → exit north at Shenwumen → Jingshan Park

But plan the bookings first.

If your Forbidden City ticket is confirmed

Official Tiananmen rules recognize Palace Museum reservations among the designated records that can be used for access to Tiananmen Square. Keep the confirmation ready and bring the same passport.

If you only have a Tiananmen reservation

You still need a separate Palace Museum ticket. For the current foreign-visitor ticket routes, read: Forbidden City tickets for foreign visitors.

If the Forbidden City is sold out, read: Forbidden City Sold Out? Can Foreigners Buy Tickets at the Gate in 2026?

If you have neither WeChat nor anyone who can help

The Beijing 12345 guidance provides another facilitated route: visitors holding reservations for certain nearby attractions can enter Tiananmen Square with that reservation record.

It specifically notes the National Museum as an alternative route for foreign visitors in some cases. The National Museum’s international website supports booking by email and passport number.

However, do not reserve another attraction only as a trick if you do not intend to visit it. Those attractions have their own capacity limits and reservation rules.

A hotel-assisted Tiananmen booking is usually the cleaner solution.

Current contact information

Be careful with old blog posts.

The Tiananmen Area Management Committee changed its public telephone number on December 30, 2025.

Current public contact: +86-10-65016000 08:00–17:00

Older pages may still display +86-10-86409123 as the reservation hotline; the Management Committee’s later official notice says the old number was discontinued.

This is exactly the kind of detail that makes old Tiananmen guides fail foreign visitors.

If you are considering paid reservation help

Some marketplaces sell Tiananmen reservation assistance. If you consider one, check these points first:

  • It is a private service, not a government product. Entry to the square itself remains free.
  • It does not bypass the real-name reservation or the on-site identity and security check. No listing can guarantee entry.
  • Check exactly what is being purchased: reservation assistance only, or a guided product that adds a tour.
  • Check the provider’s scope, recent reviews, and refund terms — including what happens if the reservation fails or your visit date changes.

Treat paid help as a convenience after the official routes above, not as a replacement for them. Keep any confirmation together with the passport used for the booking.

Common mistakes

“The square is free, so I can just walk in.”

No. Free admission does not mean no reservation.

“I bought a Tiananmen ticket from a reseller.”

The square itself is free. A paid product may be charging for reservation assistance or a tour, not admission. Read what you are buying.

“I have a Tiananmen reservation, so I can enter the Forbidden City.”

No. Palace Museum admission is separate.

“I have a Forbidden City reservation, so I definitely need another square reservation.”

Check the official Tiananmen rules first. A valid Palace Museum reservation is one of the designated reservation records that official Tiananmen guidance has recognized for square access.

“My friend booked it, so my friend must be with me.”

Not necessarily. Official rules provide identity-based verification when the main reserver is absent.

Bottom line

If you do not have a Chinese phone number:

  1. Do not fight the Tiananmen web portal — the official guidance says it does not support international phone-number verification.
  2. Use the official 天安门广场预约参观 WeChat mini-program.
  3. If the mini-program still blocks you, ask a friend, hotel or host to reserve using your exact passport information.
  4. Before making a duplicate booking, check whether you already have a valid reservation for the Forbidden City or another designated Tiananmen-area site that can be used for square access.
  5. Bring the original passport.

The problem is not that foreign visitors are banned from booking. The problem is that the booking channels are not equally friendly to foreign phone numbers.
