Shenzhen 5-Day Visa on Arrival From Hong Kong: Ports and 2026 Risks

Quick answer · Updated October 13, 2026

Chinese immigration rules allow the Shenzhen port-visa authority to issue a five-day special economic zone tourist visa. It is a Shenzhen-only entry route, not a general permission to visit Guangdong or mainland China. Issuance is discretionary and nationality, issuing-office hours, fee and individual circumstances require confirmation before you travel from Hong Kong. Crucially, the new Huanggang border building opened October 12, 2026, replacing the temporary passenger facility.

First check whether you already have a different legal entry route

Travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen may involve several different entry rules:

Route What it means What it does not mean
Ordinary Chinese visa Enter under the visa’s stated validity and stay conditions A visa for Hong Kong alone is not necessarily a mainland visa
Unilateral or bilateral visa-free entry Entry allowed if your specific passport and purpose meet the latest terms Not automatically available to every nationality
Shenzhen SEZ 5-day port visa A visa issued by an eligible Shenzhen port authority, limited to Shenzhen’s administrative area Not a five-day pass for Guangzhou, Dongguan or the rest of China
240-hour visa-free transit A separate nationality-, port- and onward-route-based immigration program Not a substitute for the Shenzhen port visa if your itinerary fails transit rules

Begin with our China visa checker and transit visa decision guide. If you already have a simpler valid route, do not queue for a discretionary port visa by default.

What the national immigration authority actually confirms

The National Immigration Administration’s port-visa regulations say authorities in Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Xiamen may issue tourist visas with three- or five-day stays under the special economic zone regime. Holders must not travel outside the administrative area of the issuing city. A holder generally enters through the port where the visa was issued.

These provisions are a legal permission for the authority to issue, not a guarantee that an individual passport holder will be accepted at any given checkpoint.

National rules do not, by themselves, establish a universal list of approved nationalities for a particular counter today, exact fee, office hours, or the precise day-counting practice at the border. Treat social-media anecdotes about “everyone pays ¥130” or “any crossing issues it” as unverified.

Important October 2026 change: new Huanggang Port

An October 9 joint Shenzhen–Hong Kong announcement confirmed the new Huanggang passenger building opened October 12, 2026 at 06:30, offering 24-hour passenger clearance. The former temporary Huanggang passenger inspection building suspended the cross-border passenger service when the new site opened.

This matters if an older blog tells you to go to the old temporary hall or uses photos and walking directions from a pre-opening journey. Update your Hong Kong-side transit arrangements using the Shenzhen port authority’s current notice.

A 24-hour checkpoint is not proof that every category of visa is issued 24 hours a day. An unrelated port opening-hours notice cannot establish that the five-day SEZ visa desk is staffed at midnight.

Which border should you choose from Hong Kong?

A 2026 Shenzhen municipal announcement describes port visa services at Huanggang and Luohu. Its wording about broad port-visa services does not independently confirm your individual SEZ tourist visa eligibility or the exact opening times of the SEZ-visa issuing counter.

Route being considered What to verify before crossing
Luohu / Lo Wu Whether the Shenzhen SEZ tourist port-visa office is processing your nationality and travel date, and its office hours
New Huanggang Which desk issues this specific permit inside the new building, not the old temporary hall; office hours vs 24-hour immigration clearance
West Kowloon high-speed rail Whether there is a legally suitable issuing process before mainland immigration; do not assume the station issues Shenzhen SEZ visas
Futian or another checkpoint Do not rely on its general cross-border operating hours as evidence of a five-day visa issuance desk

To confirm in advance, use official Shenzhen Port Office notices at ka.sz.gov.cn and Chinese immigration’s 12367 immigration service. If you cannot confirm the particular issuance location, nationality acceptance and correct travel sequence, do not travel to a border depending on this visa.

What to prepare before leaving Hong Kong

  • Your original passport, with validity and blank pages meeting the issuing authority’s requirements.
  • Your exact nationality, travel purpose and intended five-day itinerary. These determine whether the port-visa path is even available.
  • Your intended entry checkpoint, return trip to Hong Kong or onward exit, Shenzhen accommodation details and a way to pay the official charge.
  • An offline copy of any current written official visa-office instruction obtained for your passport and port.
  • Enough time to make a different travel decision without crossing or overstaying if staff decline the application.

Do not print an unverified application fee or guarantee photos will be accepted in any format. Ask the issuing authority about currency, payment methods, photos, and on-site identity checks.

At the border: safe decision and refusal plan

  1. Before crossing, confirm whether the chosen port has a visa-issuing authority and whether your passport/purpose fits this Shenzhen SEZ visa.
  2. Follow that authority’s application-before-entry instructions. Do not confuse a general immigration queue with the application counter.
  3. Pay only official assessed fees and submit the real passport information requested. Do not rely on a third-party “guaranteed visa” agent.
  4. If issued, check the document’s authorized area, dates, entries and departure conditions. Remain in Shenzhen, not elsewhere in Guangdong.
  5. If you are refused, do not attempt to enter mainland China anyway. Follow border-officer directions and arrange travel under another authorized regime from an appropriate location.

The difference between a successful visa and an unconfirmed application is the essential decision. A queue ticket or verbal estimate is not permission to enter.

Why online fee and day-count claims conflict

Travelers in 2026 Shenzhen discussions report different prices, queues and passport experiences. Accounts may mix SEZ five-day visas, other port visas or normal visa-free entry, and some predate the new Huanggang building. The claims help identify what to ask, but are not current, authoritative operating rules.

Rather than publishing an unsupported universal price or deadline, get the issuing desk’s current confirmation for your passport, permit category and port. A five-day Shenzhen-only trip should leave time for a timely lawful exit; verify the start/end dates on the visa itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Guangzhou with a Shenzhen five-day SEZ visa?

No. NIA says holders of a special economic zone tourist visa must stay within the city administrative area where issued. Guangzhou is outside Shenzhen.

Does the new Huanggang crossing issue visas 24 hours a day?

The new passenger border clearance operates 24 hours according to the October 2026 official notice. That does not establish 24-hour processing for this visa subtype.

Can I apply at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station?

Do not assume this. Verify a legitimate issuing process and your entry eligibility before buying a high-speed rail ticket that depends on issuance.

Is the fee the same for every passport?

This page does not assert an amount. Confirm the latest fee for your passport and permit class from the issuing authority, not an older traveler comment.

What if my visa on arrival is refused?

Follow immigration instructions and use an alternative legal route rather than trying another checkpoint without resolving eligibility.
