Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Entry in 2026: US Passports and Mainland Connections

Quick decision · Checked October 12, 2026

Under the NIA's August 2026 policy, ordinary-passport holders from 61 listed countries—including the United States—may qualify for Hainan's separate 30-day visa-free admission, but this authorization is geographically limited to Hainan.

What the Hainan-only waiver permits

The National Immigration Administration’s August 20, 2026 policy summary names 61 countries whose ordinary-passport holders may enter Hainan visa-free for up to 30 days, including the United States. The listed purposes include tourism, business visits, family visits, medical trips and eligible short-term events. Work and study remain outside the waiver.

The geographical condition matters: the policy permits stays within the administrative territory of Hainan Province, not a general 30-day tour of Beijing, Shanghai and Hainan.

First check your arrival airport and actual first immigration point

NIA states that the policy uses Hainan’s open ports of entry. When you book, distinguish an international arrival at an eligible Hainan port from an itinerary that first completes mainland immigration at Beijing, Guangzhou or Shanghai and then takes a domestic connection. The Hainan-only exemption is not a blanket visa permission for transit sightseeing or domestic movement elsewhere in mainland China.

If your trip touches another mainland province, check whether you separately qualify for nationwide visa-free admission, a visa or an eligible transit arrangement. Do not assume ‘final destination Hainan’ overrides the immigration port.

US passport example: family visit in Haikou

A US ordinary-passport holder flying from an overseas destination directly to an open Hainan airport and remaining in Hainan for an eligible short visit may fit the nationality, place and purpose elements. Retain a dated outward journey, local accommodation and family contact where relevant. Immigration retains the right to inspect the documentation and decide admission.

If the same traveler wants to see Beijing before Haikou, the Hainan regional waiver alone is not the route to rely on; check the separate applicable rule before buying domestic connecting flights.

Do the 30 days restart if I leave Hainan?

Do not turn a separate entry event into a simple ‘visa run’ promise. The actual entry, exit, nationality, purpose, ticket and border assessment determine eligibility. A future entry must satisfy the then-current policy. The NIA country expansion notice also shows why lists can change; July 2026 screenshots may already be outdated.

If staying with relatives rather than in a hotel, verify required non-hotel lodging registration separately.

Frequently asked questions

Are US tourists on the Hainan list?

Yes, US ordinary-passport holders are included in the cited August 2026 NIA list, subject to all other conditions.

Can I visit Beijing using Hainan’s waiver?

The Hainan regional waiver itself is restricted to the province. You need a separately applicable legal basis for travel elsewhere in mainland China.

Is Hainan’s waiver the same as 240-hour transit?

No. They are distinct programs with different eligibility, geography and onward-ticket conditions.
