Quick answer: If you are visiting Beijing's Summer Palace (颐和园) and its official online ticket purchase will not accept your overseas phone number, you can use the park gate's comprehensive service window (综合服务窗口). Beijing's municipal government says staff can help foreign visitors buy an admission ticket using a valid passport or foreign permanent-resident ID. You do not have to pay an unverified intermediary merely because the official WeChat booking route requires a mainland phone number. Beijing government response to a foreign visitor.

Which booking route should you use?
| You have… | Official option | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| A mainland China phone number and working Chinese ticket account | Official Changyou Gongyuan (畅游公园) platform | Real-name account verification; use the current official booking flow |
| Only a foreign phone number | Staff-assisted ticket purchase at the park gate | Bring a passport or other accepted valid original ID |
| WeChat does not work | Go to an official park gate comprehensive service window | Ask staff to arrange an eligible admission ticket |
| A third-party seller's QR code | Verify the actual supplier and park acceptance | Beijing says its municipal parks have not authorized third-party ticket sellers |
| A tight schedule or holiday arrival | Confirm opening conditions and possible gate queues before traveling | No website guarantees availability or time at a ticket window |
In its June 20, 2025 response, Beijing's 12345 service explicitly said the Summer Palace's online first-time booking flow did not support foreign phone numbers, and described a staff-assisted walk-up route for foreigners. In a July 22, 2025 response, the municipal parks authority confirmed that its municipal parks do not require general advance reservations and named the Changyou Gongyuan platform as the official sales channel. These are authoritative published instructions, but you should still check changes or temporary ticket controls for the day you visit.

Step 1: try the official online route only if your account can verify
The official municipal channel is Changyou Gongyuan (畅游公园) on its WeChat account or official Beijing parks ticketing site. The government says eligible park e-tickets are sold 1–7 days in advance through that channel. A visitor using a foreign mobile number may reach a first-time real-name verification gate that only accepts mainland numbers. Beijing 12345 municipal parks reply.
Do not repeatedly attempt to insert an invented +86 number, borrow a stranger's account, or pay a private QR code because of the verification error. Changing your phone connection does not by itself turn a foreign number into a supported mainland mobile account.
Step 2: buy an admission ticket at a staffed Summer Palace gate
- Bring your original valid passport, not just a photo in your phone. If you have a foreign permanent-resident ID, staff can advise on that route.
- Find a comprehensive service window near the official park entrance. The exact location may vary by gate; ask staff before joining a line for an ordinary QR scan.
- Show the note below to explain you are a visitor with an overseas number and need staff-assisted ticketing.
- Ask which admission ticket category and price applies on your specific date. Separate scenic areas or combined tickets can have different prices; check before payment.
- Make payment using a method supported at that staffed counter and retain the actual receipt or issued admission record.
Beijing's public July 2025 reply lists RMB cash, BEIJING PASS and supported bank card payments at comprehensive service windows. International-card availability depends on the actual counter/terminal; bring an independent payment fallback rather than assume every overseas card works.

您好,我是外国游客,只有境外手机号,无法通过“畅游公园”完成实名购票。我带了护照原件,请问综合服务窗口在哪里?能帮我人工购票吗?
Hello. I am a foreign visitor with only an overseas phone number, so I cannot complete the official Changyou Gongyuan identity check. I have my original passport. Where is the comprehensive service window, and can the staff assist with ticketing?
If you need to call in advance, the Summer Palace's published service line is +86 10 6288 1144, with English assistance reported 08:30–17:00; hours can change. Government response.
Do you need an advance reservation?
The municipal parks authority's July 2025 answer says its municipal parks generally do not require a reservation, with valid admission tickets available through official online and offline channels. This statement covers the Summer Palace under that municipal administration; it does not mean the Forbidden City / Palace Museum uses the same policy. The Palace Museum has a different ticket system and should be booked through its own foreign visitor ticket guide.
For a holiday, a particular park event, or an admission area with separate capacity controls, verify the current announcements rather than treating general access as guaranteed.
What about Klook, Viator or a third-party ticket?
The municipality stated in July 2025 that it had not authorized third-party ticket-purchasing platforms to sell its municipal park tickets. That does not prove every bundled tour is fake, but it does mean a marketplace listing alone is not proof of a direct officially authorized park ticket. Ask the seller exactly who issues the admission and whether an authentic park entitlement is included. For a simple self-guided visit without a mainland number, the government-documented service window is clearer.
If the ticket window cannot help
Ask staff what actually prevents admission: wrong gate, opening hours, a special-area ticket, temporary closure, payment or passport identity. The general foreign-phone problem is not the same as a genuinely closed park. If you are asked to pay another amount, confirm it with an official counter and obtain a receipt.

FAQ
Can I use my Singapore, US or UK phone number to verify the official park ticketing account?
Beijing's published 12345 answers say foreign phone numbers were not supported for the relevant first-time online verification. Use a supported mainland number if legitimately available, or the official staffed purchase route.
Can a passport holder buy at the gate?
Yes, according to the municipal response. Bring the original valid passport and ask for staff-assisted booking at a comprehensive service window.
Do I need to book the Summer Palace a week ahead?
The municipality says these parks generally don't require reservations; optional online tickets are typically offered 1–7 days ahead. Check current operating notices for your exact visit date.
Are tickets bought through a third-party site guaranteed valid?
No. The municipal parks authority says it does not authorize third-party ticket-selling platforms. Check any individual product and issuer before paying.
Is the Summer Palace the same as the Forbidden City?
No. They are different sites with different ticketing authorities, entrance rules and booking systems.
