Can You Board a China Train at a Later Station? 12306 'Buy Long, Ride Short' Rule
China Railway does allow a passenger to board the designated train at an intermediate station inside the purchased journey. The catch: you do not get a refund for the segment you chose not to ride.
Quick answer: Yes. China Railway 12306 states that if you hold a ticket for a journey, you may board the designated train at an intermediate station covered by that purchased journey on the travel date. The fare for the unused section is not refunded. This is the practical basis for “buy long, ride short” when a shorter segment has no inventory — but the train number, date and route coverage still have to match.
Can you board at the later station?
Choose the pattern that matches your ticket
Board the same designated train at B if B is an intermediate station within your purchased A→D journey and the ticket/date remain valid. You forfeit the unused A→B fare.
Not covered by the intermediate-boarding rule. The ticket covers the designated train. Boarding a different train is a ticket-change/rebooking problem, not “buy long, ride short.” Use the 12306 endorsement/change rules instead.
No — the station must be inside the purchased journey on that train.A ticket does not create an open rail pass. If the station is not served as part of your purchased train route, buy/change the correct ticket.
Getting off at an intermediate stop is also possible, but the unused fare is not refunded.12306 states that if a passenger boards or alights midway, the fare for the segment not traveled is not refunded.
Do not automatically apply the domestic rule.Cross-border services can have separate ticketing, immigration and boarding conditions. Check the specific international service rules rather than assuming the domestic FAQ controls.
The 12306 rule in plain English
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can I skip the original departure station? | Yes, if you board the same designated train at an intermediate station covered by the purchased journey. |
| Do I get money back for the skipped segment? | No. The untraveled section is not refunded. |
| Can I take another train from the intermediate station? | No, not under this rule. That requires a valid change/rebooking. |
| Can I get off before the purchased destination? | 12306 says passengers may alight midway; unused fare is not refunded. |
| Does this change the passenger/passport requirement? | No. The traveler and valid ID must still match the ticket. |

Examples: A → B → C → D
Purchased ticket: A → D
| Your plan | Result | Unused fare |
|---|---|---|
| Board at B, ride to D on the same train | Allowed structure | A→B is not refunded |
| Board at A, leave at C | Allowed structure | C→D is not refunded |
| Board at B, leave at C | Both are intermediate points inside the ticket, subject to the same-train condition | A→B and C→D are not refunded |
| Board at B on a different train number | Not covered | Use proper ticket change/rebooking |
| Board at E, which is outside the A→D route | Not covered | Buy/change the correct journey |
Before going to the intermediate station
- Confirm the train number, not just the origin/destination cities.
- Confirm the travel date.
- Confirm your intended station is an actual scheduled intermediate stop for that train.
- Carry the original passport tied to the ticket.
- Keep the issued ticket/order visible in 12306 or the issuing platform.
- Arrive with enough time for security and manual passport handling if needed.
If station staff cannot find or accept the ticket
- Show the train number, date, passenger and purchased A→D journey.
- Explain that B is an intermediate station on the same designated train.
- Show the original passport used for the booking.
- If the ticket was issued by a third party, verify that it is an actual issued rail ticket, not a pending booking request.
- If the staff says the specific service has a separate condition, follow the railway decision rather than arguing from a forum post.

Frequently asked questions
Will my seat disappear because I did not board at the original station?
The official English FAQ allows boarding at an intermediate station inside the purchased journey. Still, verify the live order and train because operational handling can vary by service.
Is this the same as changing the departure station?
No. The ticket remains an A→D ticket; you are simply choosing to board the designated train later along that purchased route.
Can I get a refund for the unused segment?
No. 12306 says the fare for the segment not traveled is not refunded.
