Do I Need a Paper Train Ticket in China With My Passport?
Most confusion comes from treating four different documents as the same thing. For an e-ticket, the original passport used to buy the ticket is the key boarding document.
Quick answer: If you have a valid China Railway e-ticket, 12306 says you should keep the e-ticket information and bring the original valid ID document used to buy it. For a foreign traveler, that usually means the passport tied to the booking. An itinerary sheet and a reimbursement receipt are not boarding tickets. Do not make an unnecessary queue just because you think every foreigner must “collect the paper ticket.”

Keep the e-ticket information and carry the original passport used for purchase. At stations where the automated passport reader does not work for you, use the staffed/manual lane.
This is reference information, not the boarding ticket.12306 lets passengers print/download an e-ticket itinerary sheet, but explicitly says it cannot be used as the ticket. Bring the original ID document tied to the actual e-ticket.
This is for reimbursement, not gate access.12306 explicitly says the reimbursement receipt cannot be used as the ticket. If you already printed/issued one, keep it because some refund/change procedures may require returning or reconciling it.
Check whether the agency actually issued a railway ticket.A booking request or agency confirmation is not automatically a China Railway e-ticket. Look for train number, passenger, seat/berth information and issued-ticket status. If issuance is still pending, resolve it before going to the gate.
A screenshot is not the authority.Use it as a reference only. Confirm the ticket in 12306 or with the issuing platform and carry the original passport used for booking.
Four documents that travelers often confuse
| Document | What it is | Can it alone board you? | What to carry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Railway e-ticket | Electronic passenger transport contract/voucher in the railway system | Use the valid ID tied to it for check-in/boarding | Original passport + e-ticket/order info |
| Paper ticket | A ticket form that 12306 says is still sold in some contexts | Follow the issued ticket/station instructions | Paper ticket + original ID as required |
| Itinerary sheet | Printable/downloadable journey information for an e-ticket | No | Original passport tied to the e-ticket |
| Reimbursement receipt / electronic invoice | Expense/reimbursement document | No | Keep for accounting/refund procedures, not as gate proof |

At the station: the shortest correct path
- Confirm the exact station. Chinese cities can have several major stations.
- Carry the original passport used for purchase. Do not rely on a phone photo of the passport.
- Clear security and identity checks. Use the foreign-passport/staffed lane if directed.
- Find the train number and gate. A printed itinerary can help you read the details, but it is not your boarding ticket.
- At the gate, present the passport tied to the e-ticket. If the machine does not read it, move to staff assistance rather than repeatedly scanning.
If the passport reader does not open the gate
- Keep the issued ticket/order open on your phone for reference.
- Show the original passport used to buy the ticket.
- Ask for the staffed/manual identity-check lane.
- Do not assume you need to buy the ticket again.
- If staff cannot find the ticket, verify passenger name/passport details against the order.

I have an e-ticket and this is the foreign passport used to buy it. The automated gate cannot read the passport. Where is the staffed/manual verification lane?
If you booked through Trip.com or another agency
The decision is not “agency booking = paper ticket.” The decision is whether the agency has actually issued a railway ticket. Check the booking state before travel. If the platform still says “request submitted,” “waiting for issuance” or similar, resolve that task first.
| Agency state | What to do |
|---|---|
| Ticket issued with train/passenger/seat details | Carry the original passport tied to the booking; follow the station's e-ticket/ID flow. |
| Request accepted but ticket not issued | Do not go to the gate assuming the email is enough; resolve issuance. |
| Booking shows wrong passport/name | Use the correction/rebooking route before boarding. |
Frequently asked questions
Do foreigners always have to go to a ticket counter?
No. For an issued e-ticket, 12306 describes boarding using the valid ID document tied to the ticket. A staffed counter/lane is a fallback when the machine or booking state needs help.
Can I board with the itinerary sheet?
No. 12306 explicitly says neither the itinerary sheet nor the reimbursement receipt can be used as the ticket.
Why would I print the itinerary sheet?
It can be a convenient journey reference — train, date, station and seat details — but it is not the boarding authority.
