How Early Should I Arrive at a Train Station in China?
For your first high-speed train trip in China, plan 45–60 minutes before departure. Calculate your own arrival time and learn the boarding and passport fallback rules.
Quick answer: For your first high-speed train trip in China, plan to arrive at the correct station 45–60 minutes before departure. Add time for holiday crowds, unresolved passport checks or mobility assistance. This is editorial planning guidance, not an official boarding deadline.
What time should I arrive at the station?
Enter the departure time on your ticket, then select what applies to your trip. This calculates when to reach the station entrance, not the gate or platform.
Use the local China time shown on your ticket.
30 minutes before departure
Editorial planning estimate only. The boarding gate may close earlier according to that station's announcements.
Transferring from an airport or another station? Calculate your transfer travel time separately; the buffer above covers only station entry, security, identity checks and reaching the gate.
When does train boarding close in China?
There is no single nationwide “arrive 30 minutes early” or “boarding closes exactly five minutes early” rule. China Railway 12306 says the check-in cutoff is announced by each station. You must clear security, identity checks and reach the correct gate before that station's boarding deadline.

How do I get from the station entrance to my train?
- Confirm the exact station. Beijing South, Beijing West and Beijing are different. Check your booking and navigation route.
- Enter and clear security. Bring the original ID document used to book. Every passenger and bag must be screened.
- Verify your identity and find the gate. Use the correct passport or ID; if automatic recognition fails, request a staffed lane. Follow the train number, not only the destination.
- Watch the gate display. Follow the station's live boarding announcements and enter before check-in closes.
You usually do not need to collect a paper train ticket. See the foreign-passport paper-ticket guide if you are unsure about your booking.
What if my passport will not scan at the gate?
Ask for a staffed identity-check lane promptly. Do not waste your remaining buffer by repeatedly retrying a gate that cannot read your passport.
- Show the original passport used to buy the ticket and the train number or order details.
- Ask a staff member for manual identity verification.
- If the booking identity is unresolved, ask staff to check the order before boarding begins.

What if I am running late or miss my train?
| Situation | What to do now |
|---|---|
| I am still outside the station | Go directly to the exact departure station; do not assume check-in remains open until departure. |
| The security queue is long | Ask railway staff for guidance, but never bypass security. |
| The gate has closed | Ask staff about ticket-change eligibility; do not force your way through the gate. |
| The train has left | Review missed-train change options promptly. Eligibility, timing, fees and available trains depend on the booking. |
Frequently asked questions
Is 30 minutes enough?
It can be at a familiar small station in calm conditions, but it is not guaranteed. For a first trip or large station, plan more conservatively.
Do high-speed trains need a different buffer?
Station size, queues, identity checks and gate distance matter more than the train category. Use the calculator and check the boarding cutoff.
Do foreign travelers need a paper train ticket?
Not as a universal rule. Use your original booking ID document and check the paper ticket guide if necessary.
What if I require accessibility assistance?
Arrange additional time and see 12306 wheelchair assistance.
