READY-TO-USE ITINERARY
How Can I Spend 3 Days in Beijing?
Spend Day 1 at the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park and Shichahai; keep Day 2 for the Mutianyu Great Wall; and finish Day 3 with the Temple of Heaven, Qianmen and Dashilar. Reserve the Palace Museum early and keep the route flexible around Monday closures.
Your route at a glance
All three days stay based in Beijing. Day 1 walks north through the imperial centre, Day 2 goes outside the city for the Great Wall, and Day 3 clusters around southern Beijing. Arrange dates around your confirmed Palace Museum booking.

Your day-by-day itinerary
DAY 1 · Imperial city · northbound walking route
Day 1: Imperial Beijing: Forbidden City → Jingshan → Shichahai
Spend your first full day in the imperial centre, with one hard-to-book attraction and a flexible evening.
- Morning · follow your ticket slot
Palace Museum / Forbidden City
Enter through Meridian Gate (south). Your Palace Museum reservation must match the original passport you carry. Follow the central courtyards northward; allow several hours. If your reservation is for the afternoon, swap this with low-commitment morning sightseeing.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Exit via Shenwu Gate (north) or Donghua Gate (east); the north exit is better if continuing to Jingshan.
- Early afternoon
Jingshan Park
Walk to the hilltop viewpoint overlooking the Forbidden City. Take a rest after the museum; do not add another timed museum booking.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Continue north-west towards Shichahai on foot or take a short ride if tired.
- Late afternoon → evening
Shichahai lakes and hutongs
Explore the lakeside streets, have dinner, and return to your Beijing hotel when ready. This final part is intentionally flexible.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Return by metro or car from the nearby neighbourhood.
- Palace Museum entry: Official passport-based advance reservation; normal release is 7 days before at 20:00 Beijing time. Confirm admission slot and Monday opening. Official source ↗
Alternative: No Palace Museum ticket? Swap Day 1 with another suitable day or use the sold-out recovery guide. Tiananmen Square requires separate arrangements if you add it.
DAY 2 · Huairou · outside central Beijing
Day 2: Mutianyu Great Wall: full-day excursion
Keep the entire day for travel, Wall access, walking and your return to the city. Do not book a timed city attraction today.
- Morning · leave early
Travel from Beijing to Mutianyu
Choose a return coach / car, or the officially documented public transport route: Express Bus 916 from Dongzhimen to Huairoubeidajie, then H23, H3 or H71 to Mutianyujingqu (慕田峪景区). Recheck actual schedules before leaving.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Follow signs or shuttle guidance to the scenic entrance; account for boarding and walking time.
- Late morning → afternoon
Explore Mutianyu Great Wall
Walk a section suited to your energy. Cable car and toboggan facilities may be available depending on tickets and operating conditions; keep enough time for a comfortable return.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Return to your chosen coach pickup, bus connection, or booked car.
- Evening
Return to your Beijing hotel
Expect variable traffic and queues. Keep evening plans optional rather than adding another reservation.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Use your confirmed return route and check the final departure window.
- Great Wall admission / transport: Check the official scenic-area information and your chosen transport provider. No timetable is guaranteed by this sample. Official source ↗
Alternative: If managing transfers is impractical, compare direct coach, car or Badaling before committing. Do not cram a second city attraction into Day 2.
DAY 3 · Southern Beijing · neighbourhood and park route
Day 3: Temple of Heaven → Qianmen → Dashilar
Spend the day in one compact area, with a lower-pressure blend of imperial architecture and local streets.
- Morning
Temple of Heaven
Walk in the park and visit its major monuments when they are open. The park and ancient architectural complexes operate on different hours; some inner buildings close on Mondays.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Continue by metro or car towards Qianmen.
- Afternoon
Qianmen and Dashilar lanes
Explore traditional shopping streets and side lanes at a comfortable pace. Leave space for lunch, small shops and a slower final day.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Walk locally; return to your hotel for luggage if departing.
- Evening · if staying another night
Dinner or a relaxed final walk
Avoid an inflexible final reservation if leaving Beijing the same day.
Next transfer: Next transfer: Return to your hotel or head to your departure station with extra margin.
- Temple of Heaven openings: Verify inner-complex hours and Monday restrictions, especially when planning a specific museum or hall visit. Official source ↗
Alternative: Prefer gardens and lakes? Replace the whole third day with the Summer Palace. Foreign phone numbers may not work for online tickets; use the staffed passport ticket window.
Bookings and travel essentials
- Palace Museum: passport-matched advance reservation, specific date and admission slot. Normal Monday closure; check official ticket site ↗ before your visit.
- Tiananmen Square: a separate reservation or qualifying entrance arrangement may be required if you choose to visit the square. Foreign-phone booking options ↗
- Mutianyu: decide outbound and return transport before making other commitments. Detailed transport options ↗
- Monday and Summer Palace: recheck Temple of Heaven inner-building opening rules. Summer Palace foreign-number online booking may need staff assistance at the entrance.
- Passport: carry the same original passport used for any real-name prebooking.
When plans change
- Forbidden City sold out: switch your city day to another available date, or use the recovery guide ↗.
- Your visit includes Monday: move the Palace Museum away from its usual Monday closure and verify Temple of Heaven monument opening rules.
- Prefer gardens: use a full Summer Palace day instead of the southern-centre route; check passport ticket-window instructions ↗.
- Only 2.5 days: preserve the Palace Museum and Great Wall; shorten the Temple of Heaven / Qianmen cluster according to departure time.
