Which Beijing Attractions Need Advance Booking in 2026?

Do not waste your Beijing trip trying to reserve every sight the same way. Some attractions release scarce timed slots; municipal parks can still be bought at the gate.

Quick answer: Put the Palace Museum (Forbidden City) and the National Museum of China at the top of your booking list. They use real-name timed reservations and can sell out. Do not apply the same urgency to Beijing municipal parks: Beijing's own 12345 service says parks such as the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and Jingshan do not require an advance reservation, and staffed ticket windows remain a fallback for foreign visitors who cannot use the Chinese-phone online flow.

Beijing booking action path: reserve scarce museums, choose the foreign-passport channel, keep municipal parks as flexible backups.
Use scarce museum slots as itinerary anchors; use municipal parks as flexible alternatives.

The municipal-park rule is not the Palace Museum rule. That distinction is the main reason travelers over-book or buy unnecessary third-party products.

Book Beijing in this order

  1. Choose your Palace Museum day first. Count seven days back and be ready around the 20:00 release time. Do not build non-refundable transport around a Palace Museum ticket you do not yet hold.
  2. Reserve the National Museum around the same fixed days. Its daily release is 17:00 and the museum uses three admission windows.
  3. Solve Tiananmen access after the museum anchors are known. If a qualifying same-day venue reservation already gives facilitated access, avoid creating a second unnecessary reservation task.
  4. Leave Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and Jingshan flexible. They are ideal recovery days if a scarce museum sells out or Beijing weather changes.
  5. Keep Great Wall planning separate. Mutianyu/Badaling transport and ticketing are not part of the municipal-park system. See Beijing to Mutianyu.

If the booking site rejects your foreign phone or passport

Do not buy a random third-party ticket just to bypass the form

  • Palace Museum: switch to the official international website and use your passport.
  • Summer Palace / Temple of Heaven: go to the comprehensive service window with the passport; Beijing says staff-assisted purchase is available.
  • Tiananmen Square: use the WeChat mini-program or a valid qualifying same-day venue reservation if the official rule applies.
  • National Museum: use the official English reservation site and keep the confirmation message.

Day-of-entry checklist

  • Carry the original passport used for the reservation.
  • Keep the reservation confirmation accessible offline.
  • Check the exact entrance gate — Palace Museum visitors enter via Meridian Gate.
  • Check Monday closures and exceptional holiday notices the day before.
  • Arrive early enough for Tiananmen-area security screening when applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Chinese phone number for the Forbidden City?

No. Beijing's official 12345 response directs foreign visitors to the Palace Museum international website, where a passport can be used.

Do I need a Chinese phone number for Summer Palace online tickets?

The cited municipal guidance says the online flow requires a mainland China number, but the park offers staff-assisted offline purchasing with a passport.

Are Klook/Viator/GetYourGuide official ticket sellers for municipal parks?

Beijing 12345 explicitly says the municipal park authority has not authorized third-party ticket-purchasing platforms. That does not mean every tour product is fraudulent; it means it is not the official park ticketing channel.
