China ATM Swallowed Your Foreign Bank Card? Recovery Steps for Tourists (2026)
Quick answer · Official bank guidance checked October 11, 2026
If a mainland China ATM retains your foreign card, do not walk away without recording the ATM's bank and location. Save any printed slip, contact the bank that owns the ATM, and contact your overseas card issuer about security or replacement. If the machine belongs to Bank of China (BOC), its official retained-card guidance specifically says to contact nearby branch staff or 95566. That hotline is **not a universal number for every Chinese bank**.
A retained bank card is a physical recovery task
Identify the operator
Photograph ATM sign, street/branch and transaction slip, excluding PIN.
Talk to the acquiring bank
Ask official staff about retained-card collection and document requirements.
Contact home card issuer
Freeze, monitor or replace the card per issuer instructions; arrange backup funds.

Who can return a card swallowed by a Chinese ATM?
There are two banks in your situation and they do different jobs:
| Institution | What it can help with | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| ATM operator / acquiring bank in China | Locate the specific machine, check its retained-card procedure, verify collection eligibility and office hours | That it will return every overseas card or reopen immediately |
| Your home-country card issuer | Block/freeze the account, advise on overseas fraud risk and arrange an emergency card or alternative access | Physically retrieve the card inside another bank’s machine |
For a Bank of China ATM, BOC’s current English ATM page explicitly says to contact branch staff or call 95566 when the machine retains a card. BOC’s international-visitor guide also says to keep the printed slip, confirm the collection procedure and collect the card within the institution’s prescribed period.
Do not call BOC 95566 about an Agricultural Bank, ICBC or China Construction Bank machine expecting BOC staff to release a card they do not hold. Use the exact operator’s official sign, branch desk and website.
What to do in the first ten minutes
- Wait for the ATM session to finish. Do not pull the slot, press random buttons repeatedly or accept a stranger’s offer to open the machine. Never re-enter your PIN to “force” the card out.
- Record the machine identity: bank name/logo, branch or kiosk address, ATM number (if shown), exact time, amount requested, and error/status message. Take a photo of the exterior and slip, not your exposed PIN, full PAN or passport number.
- Keep the transaction receipt / slip. If none printed, write down the time and visible ATM ID yourself. This helps the bank identify the card and reconcile any cash-dispense dispute.
- Look for on-site bank staff or the operator’s real support number on the bank’s official site/sign. State that an overseas-issued card was retained and ask which staffed office handles recovery.
- Contact your home issuer through its legitimate app or number on your statements. Explain the ATM retained the physical card overseas and ask whether to freeze, lock, replace or monitor it. Do not assume a retained card is impossible to misuse.
- Check the actual withdrawal ledger. “Card swallowed” does not prove that a withdrawal was also debited. If you see a debit without cash, report a separate cash-dispense/authorization dispute to the ATM operator and issuing bank.
Do not give a “fixer” your card PIN, OTP or authorization codes. Photographing proof for an official support case is different from posting a passport image to public social media.
BOC ATM versus other Chinese banks: the recovery difference
| ATM operator | Safe next contact |
|---|---|
| Bank of China / 中国银行 | Nearby BOC branch staff or 95566, per the bank’s retained-card instructions |
| ICBC / 工商银行 | The ICBC phone/branch listed on the official machine or bank website; do not assume BOC collection rules apply |
| Agricultural Bank of China / 农业银行 | Contact the operator shown on the machine or official branch listings |
| CCB / 建设银行 | Contact the operator shown on the machine or official branch listings |
| Privately operated or unfamiliar ATM | Locate the legal bank/operator before giving anyone identity details or agreeing to a “recovery fee” |
Ask for the applicable identity documents, collection time limit and office. A foreign visitor may need their original passport and proof they own the overseas card. Whether a particular machine will release an overseas card to its original holder depends on the operator and issuer policy.
Chinese message to show the branch
我是外国游客,我的境外银行卡刚才被贵行的ATM吞卡了。时间是____,机器编号或位置是____。请问如何登记吞卡、需要什么证件、在哪里和什么时间可以领取?如无法返还,请提供官方处理说明。
I am visiting from overseas and your bank’s ATM retained my foreign-issued card at this location and time. Please tell me how to register the incident, which ID is required, and where/when the card may be collected. If it cannot be returned, please provide the official next step.
It is midnight or the branch is closed. What now?
You may have to wait for the relevant bank’s staffed hours. Do not wait to secure the card with your issuer if it could be used without authorization.
- Use your issuer’s in-app lock or official loss hotline, based on its advice. A freeze may affect future use of the same card; ask the issuer before assuming it is temporary.
- Keep the machine photo, transaction date and bank location. Ask hotel reception to help identify the nearest official branch in the morning, not an unofficial collector.
- Use another legitimate card, a known companion’s own payment method or your available RMB cash. If an accommodation or service accepts a foreign POS card, use only an approved transaction in your own name.
- In an actual emergency with no funds, contact your bank’s international emergency assistance or your country’s consular assistance resources to understand available options. A consulate does not automatically pay expenses.
- Never accept a stranger’s proposal to hold your passport, “rent” an Alipay account, or move money through unknown personal QR accounts.
The CTD China payment fallback guide covers alternative ways to pay after a declined wallet transaction. A retained physical card requires bank recovery in addition to a payment fallback.
Was money withdrawn even though the card was kept?
Check the issuer ledger and any ATM slip before filing the correct dispute. You may see a pending authorization, a completed cash debit, or no transaction at all. Write down the amount and do not describe an unverified pending charge as confirmed lost cash.
If there was a duplicate debit or a cash-dispenser error, contact both the Chinese ATM operator (machine logs) and the overseas issuer (account posting and dispute). Preserve the case numbers from both sides.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Chinese bank open the ATM and hand back my card immediately?
Do not count on immediate retrieval. Ask the owning bank for the applicable retained-card collection timetable, branch and ID requirements.
Is 95566 the Chinese national ATM lost-card hotline?
No. 95566 is Bank of China’s own customer service number. Use it only when contacting BOC about the relevant machine.
Should I cancel my card before asking the bank to return it?
Ask your overseas issuing bank immediately about locking and replacement. There is no single answer for every issuer’s risk and cancellation process.
Can a foreign passport identify me when collecting the card?
A passport may be part of the identity check, but the operator sets the actual process; bring the original and proof of card ownership.
What if the ATM kept the card and I see a debit but received no cash?
Log that as a separate failed-cash-withdrawal issue with transaction proof and both banks; do not assume either the debit or refund is final until reconciled.
