China Domestic Flight to International Departure: Where Is Exit Immigration?
On an ordinary Guangzhou-to-Beijing domestic flight, you have not crossed China's international border. Your onward international flight creates a separate exit-inspection step at its departure airport.
Quick answer: For an ordinary Guangzhou → Beijing domestic flight followed by a separate Beijing → overseas international flight, the traveler normally completes outbound Chinese immigration at the Beijing departure airport before the international flight—not on the original Guangzhou domestic sector. The China Southern Airlines official Beijing Daxing transfer procedure specifically shows frontier inspection for domestic-to-international departures, with different paths for through-ticket and separate-ticket connections. An ordinary domestic flight does not use another entry on a single-entry visa. Always check whether either leg is actually the domestic sector of an international through-flight, a special exception.

Example: Guangzhou → Beijing Daxing → Bahrain on one-entry visa
In a 2026 traveler question, a foreign visitor already in mainland China worried that a single-entry visa might be “used up” by a flight from Guangzhou to Beijing before flying overseas from Beijing Daxing. That combines two different legal movements: an ordinary domestic flight inside China and a later outbound international border crossing.
For the common ordinary itinerary, the Guangzhou → Beijing flight does not itself leave mainland China. The departure flight from Beijing to an overseas destination is when the traveler goes through Chinese exit immigration. China Southern's first-party Daxing airport process documents border inspection on domestic-to-international transfer routes, though particular check-in and transfer areas differ by ticket type.
A single-entry visa limits the number of entries into China under that visa; ordinary domestic transport does not consume another entry. This does not extend the visa's existing authorized period of stay or guarantee permission to remain beyond the original deadline.
Where does outbound passport control happen on each itinerary?
| Itinerary | What normally happens | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Guangzhou → Beijing ordinary domestic, then Beijing → overseas | Ordinary domestic security in Guangzhou; international exit frontier inspection in Beijing | Domestic boarding uses up the visa entry |
| Two flights on a valid connected through ticket | Follow official airline domestic-to-international transfer channel at Beijing | Every airline uses exactly one hall/counter |
| Separately purchased domestic and international tickets | May need domestic baggage claim, international recheck-in, security, exit inspection | Suitcase automatically transfers |
| Domestic sector of a genuine international through-flight | May have special baggage, passenger handling or international-sector controls | Ordinary domestic process applies identically |
The last case is a crucial exception. The same China Southern official procedures separately describe Domestic Segment of International Flight. Check actual flight number, itinerary and airline handling—not just cities on a booking email.
Daxing's official connecting-flight flow: through ticket versus separate tickets
China Southern has published a newer Beijing Daxing Airport Transit Procedures page with specific processes. It describes that some domestic-to-international connected through-ticket flights follow a dedicated transit hall and applicable customs/frontier checks, while a non-connected booking with checked bags follows domestic baggage claim, international check-in, relevant inspections and the overseas boarding gate.
Do not copy counters or terminal levels from a web page without checking its last update: other China Southern regional versions contain older descriptions, including outdated health-measurement text. The current operational guide and staff instructions at the airport supersede diagrams from old blog posts.
- Verify Beijing Capital (PEK) versus Beijing Daxing (PKX) on each segment; these are different airports. A same-city connecting itinerary does not mean a same-terminal connection.
- Ask if luggage is checked through to your overseas destination. If not, allow enough time to collect and recheck at the actual international terminal.
- Show the original passport and all relevant visas to your airline's staff; keep your Chinese legal-stay status valid until departure.
- Follow official Domestic to International signs or staff-directed transfer corridor for your fare and airline.
- Complete China exit frontier inspection before the overseas flight unless your particular route uses a documented special process.
Can you leave the Beijing airport during an 18-hour layover?
If you were already lawfully admitted to China and arrive at Beijing on an ordinary domestic flight, you are still on the mainland side before outbound passport control. An 18-hour layover does not by itself force you to remain in an international transit zone. You may be able to leave the airport and return for departure if your authorized stay remains valid, the flights really are standard domestic plus international sectors, and you can make the return.
That is a different question from a passenger flying international → Beijing → international who has never entered mainland China and is considering a transit-without-visa exception. Do not use the 240-hour Beijing transit rule to calculate permission for a traveler already admitted on their Chinese visa.
For sightseeing during a layover, calculate travel to and from the correct airport, attraction entry requirements, checked-bag handling and the time to clear outbound checks. Do not promise a Great Wall round trip without actual transport and gate timing; 18 hours is not a guarantee.
What if your visa is single-entry or close to expiring?
Single entry and allowed length of stay are separate controls. If you entered China lawfully once under a single-entry visa, a domestic Guangzhou → Beijing journey is not a second entry. You can normally continue domestic travel during your current permitted stay, then depart internationally before that stay expires.
However, leaving the international departure airport for a city excursion is not necessarily safe if you have already completed exit border inspection or are in a restricted international departure area. If you are still landside and your actual permitted stay has expired, you cannot assume a long domestic layover automatically extends lawful presence. Contact immigration or airline support before taking action.
China's official exit and entry rules establish border inspection at international exit/entry ports; no domestic boarding pass creates a new entry privilege or renews the permitted stay.
Baggage, terminals and airline communication fallback
At PKX, domestic arrivals and international departures are part of the same airport system but different checked-bag, inspection and gate flows. At PEK, the terminal assignment, ground transfer and airline location differ. When two flight bookings are independent, the domestic carrier might not have a record of the overseas connection, so the traveler may be required to collect bags and recheck for the international flight.
Ask the airline this question before travel
My trip is [Guangzhou → Beijing Daxing] on [flight A] followed by [Beijing Daxing → overseas] on [flight B]. Are these ordinary domestic and international segments, or a domestic sector of an international through-flight? Are the bags checked through, and at which airport will outbound China passport control occur? I am already in China under a single-entry visa and want to confirm whether I stay landside during my [18-hour] connection.
At the airport, actual staff instructions and airline notices control specific counter placement. Avoid using an old terminal map as permission to ignore security or border restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Guangzhou-to-Beijing domestic flight count as exiting China?
No for an ordinary mainland domestic itinerary. A later Beijing-to-overseas sector normally requires exit immigration at Beijing.
Can I fly domestically on a single-entry Chinese visa?
Generally, if you are already lawfully admitted and remain within your authorized stay; the domestic flight doesn't create another entry.
Will I clear Chinese exit immigration twice?
Not ordinarily for domestic-to-international travel. Specific through-flight or special segment processing must be checked with the carrier.
What if one flight lands at PEK and the next departs PKX?
That is an actual cross-airport journey, not an airside transfer. Plan ground transport, checked-bag handling, lawful immigration status and ample check-in time.
