Foreign Bank Cards on Beijing & Shanghai Metro: Tap to Ride Guide

You may not need an Alipay transit QR at all. Beijing and Shanghai now support direct contactless bank-card entry, but the network details and technical exclusions are not identical.

Quick answer: In both Beijing and Shanghai, many international visitors can now tap an eligible contactless bank card directly at the metro gate. Beijing's current network guidance covers the five major card networks; Shanghai accepts eligible UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB contactless cards but publishes technical exclusions. If direct tap fails, do not spend 20 minutes fighting an Alipay transit code at the gate — use the staffed ticket fallback first.

Metro payment path: check city and card, tap the designated gate, use staffed ticket fallback if declined.
Direct bank-card tap is a separate payment path from Alipay/WeChat transit QR.

Can you try direct Tap to Ride?

Beijing vs Shanghai: the practical difference

CityCurrent official direct-tap coverageWhat to checkEasy fallback
BeijingFull-network support across the five major networks: UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB and American ExpressUse the designated contactless gate; issuer/card compatibility still mattersTicket machine or staffed counter; cash/card options vary by station equipment
ShanghaiEligible UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB contactless cards across the urban metro networkShanghai publishes chip/ODA technical exclusions and recommends enabling small-value password-free contactless paymentEvery station service center has card terminals for single-journey tickets

A supported card network is not a guarantee that one specific card will be approved. Issuer fraud controls, contactless settings and chip configuration can still cause a decline.

How to use direct Tap to Ride without creating a fare problem

  1. Use a gate marked for bank-card contactless entry. Do not hold your card over a QR-code-only scanner.
  2. Use the same physical card or mobile-wallet device at entry and exit. Mixing the phone on entry and plastic card on exit can create an unmatched journey.
  3. Wait for the gate confirmation. Do not follow another passenger through before you know your own tap was accepted.
  4. Keep enough credit/balance available. Shanghai's guidance explicitly asks travelers to check sufficient balance/credit and small-value contactless settings.

我的境外银行卡不能直接刷闸机。请问可以在服务中心用这张银行卡购买单程票吗?

My overseas bank card did not work directly at the gate. Can I use this card at the service center to buy a single-journey ticket?

Do you still need an Alipay metro code?

Not for the direct-tap task. A bank card linked to Alipay, an Alipay transit QR, a physical contactless card and a Shanghai Metro Daduhui QR are different payment products. Use the simplest working path for the trip in front of you.

  • If your direct card tap works, you can ride without setting up a separate transit QR.
  • If direct tap fails but the service center accepts the card, buy the ticket and troubleshoot the app later.
  • If you need buses, ferries or another city, check that mode separately — Beijing/Shanghai metro support does not automatically extend nationwide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Apple Pay/phone NFC?

Beijing explicitly supports eligible mobile devices linked to supported cards. Shanghai's guidance focuses on eligible contactless cards/hardware. Use the same device for entry and exit and keep the physical card as backup.

Does Mastercard work in both cities?

Yes, Mastercard is within the current supported networks in both Beijing and Shanghai, subject to card/issuer technical compatibility.

If Alipay says “verification failed,” will metro tap also fail?

No. They are different authorization paths.
