Can You Extend China’s 30-Day Visa-Free Stay? Stay Permit Rules & PSB Steps

Visa-free entry does not create an automatic extension right. Chinese immigration rules provide a stay-permit application route for some visa-exempt foreigners who need more time, but approval depends on the legal basis, reason and supporting evidence.

Quick answer: China’s immigration regulations provide a stay-permit application route for visa-exempt foreigners who need to remain beyond the visa-free period. That is not the same as an automatic “extend my 30-day waiver” button. You must apply through the local exit-entry administration before your lawful stay expires, provide supporting evidence for the need to remain, and keep an exit plan because approval and duration are discretionary.

Visa-free stay extension decision flow: identify the waiver basis, count remaining days, document the need, apply to PSB or exit.
Do not wait for day 30 to discover whether your reason and documents support a stay-permit application.

What NIA actually says

RuleMeaning for a traveler
Visa-exempt foreigners who need longer than the visa-free period must apply for a stay permit under the rulesThere is a formal in-China application path; it is not an informal airport extension
Application is made in person to local exit-entry administrationPlan around the PSB / exit-entry office responsible for your place of stay
Passport, application/photo and supporting material are requiredYour reason must be documented, not just stated verbally

Prepare a real case, not just a request

  • Original passport and current entry record/stamp information.
  • Current accommodation registration / lawful address documentation where requested.
  • Application form and compliant photo according to the local office.
  • Evidence supporting why you need to remain: medical documents, emergency records, family/business circumstances or other relevant proof.
  • Current itinerary and planned departure.
  • Any translation/supporting materials the office asks for.

Apply before the lawful stay expires

Do not build the plan around “I’ll ask on day 30.” Processing, appointment availability and requests for additional evidence consume time. Start early enough to remain lawfully in China while the application is being handled under the local office’s instructions.

Do not infer a universal extension length. A traveler report of “another 30 days” does not create a national guaranteed duration or a right to a second extension.

If the stay permit is not approved

  1. Ask the office to confirm the lawful date by which you must leave.
  2. Keep a viable outbound ticket/route.
  3. Do not intentionally overstay while searching for another office to give a different answer.
  4. If you later want to return, check the current visa-free/re-entry rules separately.

Ask the local exit-entry office

我是免签入境,目前合法停留到【日期】。因为【原因】需要继续停留,并有【证明材料】。请问我是否可以申请停留证件,需要提交哪些材料,应该在什么时候递交?

I entered visa-free and my lawful stay currently ends on [date]. I need to remain because of [reason] and have [supporting documents]. May I apply for a stay permit, what documents are required, and when should I file?

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend simply because I want another month of tourism?

Do not assume so. The rules provide an application mechanism but not a guaranteed leisure extension.

Can I get a second extension?

CTD has not found a current official rule guaranteeing repeated extensions for visa-free tourists. Ask the local authority based on your specific legal basis.

Should I overstay if my appointment is after day 30?

No. Contact the office before expiry and follow its instructions for maintaining lawful status.
