English guide for foreign visitors
How do I visit Hangzhou West Lake in one day?
Back to Guides · Hangzhou West Lake official guide ↗
Step 1 of 6
Decide day trip or overnight
Do this
Decide whether you are doing West Lake as a same-day return from Shanghai or staying overnight in Hangzhou. A same-day trip leaves less walking time, so plan a shorter lakeside segment.
- Done when
- You have written down the hours you will actually have at the lake after station transfers, and you have chosen either a short segment or the full loop to match.
If this fails
If the available hours are too few for the segment you wanted, shorten the segment or move the trip to an overnight stay rather than rushing the loop.
Step 2 of 6
Confirm trains on 12306
Do this
Check and book your Shanghai-to-Hangzhou and return trains on the official 12306 channel before you travel. Do not rely on an assumed final train time.
- Done when
- 12306 shows an issued ticket for both the outbound and the return journey, not just a search result or a pending order.
If this fails
If no suitable return train is available, change the date or plan an overnight stay instead of assuming a train will appear later.
Step 3 of 6
Choose your lakeside segment
Do this
Choose one shore or causeway segment to walk rather than attempting the whole lake. The lake is divided by the Bai Causeway, Su Causeway and Yanggong Causeway, and the full loop is roughly 12 km.
- Done when
- Your map app shows a walking route you can complete within your remaining hours, and you know where you will rejoin transport.
If this fails
If the segment is longer than your remaining time, cut it at the nearest causeway crossing or switch to a shorter shore walk.
Step 4 of 6
Add a boat or skip it
Do this
Decide whether to add a lake boat to see the islets and pavilions, or to stay on foot. The lake has islets such as Small Yingzhou Islet, Mid-lake Pavilion and Ruangong Islet in the water.
- Done when
- You have either a confirmed boat ticket from the operator or a clear decision to skip the boat and keep walking.
If this fails
If boat times or tickets cannot be confirmed, skip the boat and keep the walking segment rather than waiting without a confirmed departure.
Step 5 of 6
Plan your return to the station
Do this
Work backwards from your confirmed return train to set the time you must leave the lake, allowing for the transfer back to the station.
- Done when
- You have a leave-the-lake time that gets you to the station before your confirmed return train.
If this fails
If the transfer time leaves no margin, shorten the lakeside segment or choose an earlier return train.
Step 6 of 6
Set a rain or fatigue alternate
Do this
Before you start walking, decide what you will do if it rains or you tire: a shorter shore walk, a boat instead of walking, or an earlier return train.
- Done when
- You have a named alternate that still fits your confirmed return train.
- Finished only when
- You have a confirmed return train on 12306, you completed the lakeside segment you chose within your available hours, and you returned to the station in time for that train.
- You only have a search result or pending order on 12306, not an issued return ticket.
- You attempted the full 12 km loop without checking whether your available hours allowed it.
- You waited for a boat without a confirmed departure time.
- You missed the return train because the lakeside segment ran longer than planned.
If this fails
If no alternate fits, plan to return to the station early rather than forcing the full loop.
After this task
Reviewing the whole trip's pacing is a different job from planning one West Lake day, and it may change whether this day trip should be an overnight stay.
