Which VPN Works in China for Tourists?

October 2026 reports, travel eSIM alternatives and what to do when your connection fails.

Quick answer: If you will use hotel Wi-Fi or a mainland Chinese SIM, do not assume your usual Google, WhatsApp, YouTube or X access will work. China restricts those services on its domestic networks. Travelers report using Astrill, Proton VPN, LetsVPN and Surfshark, but their experiences differ: a service that connected for one person in Beijing can fail for another in Shenzhen or on a different network. There is no VPN we can guarantee to work during your trip. If you mainly need apps on your phone, a suitable internationally routed travel eSIM or overseas roaming plan may be a simpler route — check the exact plan rather than assuming every eSIM works the same way.

Using hotel Wi-Fi?Expect the local network's access rules. Check a lawful, verified connectivity option before departure.
Using a China travel eSIM?Check whether the exact package explicitly supports the overseas apps you need; a separate VPN may not be necessary for that data connection.
Need a laptop too?Your phone's connectivity does not automatically give the laptop equivalent access. Check hotspot and tethering support.

First, decide which connection you will actually use

“Which VPN did you use?” is a useful question, but it does not establish whether you need one. The network, devices and apps you plan to use matter at least as much as the VPN brand.

Your connection in mainland ChinaWhat to expectFirst decision
Hotel, café or public Wi-FiLocal internet restrictions may block common overseas services. Some venues might have a different network arrangement; do not assume an exception.Have a lawful, tested alternative available; do not depend on hotel Wi-Fi as your only route to your important accounts.
Local Chinese SIM / local dataMobile data alone does not remove restrictions on blocked overseas services. If overseas services matter, arrange an appropriate solution before arrival; keep local apps as a fallback.
International travel eSIMSome providers route mobile traffic outside mainland China and claim Google or WhatsApp access without a separate VPN. Performance depends on the actual plan.Verify the specific China plan, network, handset compatibility and any hotspot limit. Compare China eSIM routes.
Home-carrier international roamingRouting and app reachability differ by home operator, package and device; some roaming users report success without an extra VPN.Check China-inclusive roaming details, mobile data charges and accessible apps with your home carrier.
Laptop on Wi-Fi or a phone hotspotA working phone data connection does not prove the laptop can connect or share the same routing.Verify laptop needs, tethering support, battery life and an alternative for essential work.

Do not confuse a local Chinese phone number with an international internet connection. A +86 SIM may help with app registration and SMS without changing which international sites are accessible. For phone-number issues, see our foreign visitor SIM decision guide.

Which VPNs did visitors report using in October 2026?

These are dated reports and attributed third-party tests, not CTD firsthand tests. They should help you identify what to investigate, not serve as a promise of future uptime. The tested conditions, platform and network may differ from your trip.

Astrill

Lab data + travelers

Top10VPN's September 2026 report puts Astrill first based on tests from a Shanghai-hosted environment. A traveler who visited Beijing, Shenzhen and Jinan in late September also reported a working connection in a post published October 1.

Limit: the published lab result describes its own test sample, not a guarantee for your hotel, phone or travel dates.

Proton VPN

Conflicting evidence

Top10VPN's published China test report rates Proton favorably in its tested environment. However, the October 1 first-person traveler said Proton failed during their trip; another October thread included a positive one-word report.

Limit: success in a lab and success for a traveler are different observations. Treat mixed evidence as uncertainty, not a winner.

LetsVPN

Traveler reports only

Some commenters recommended or reported using LetsVPN, while an October Shanghai discussion also described evening outages. Other travelers questioned whether the service was reliably available in China.

Limit: the reviewed source set does not provide a reliable independently measured October uptime rate for LetsVPN. Check the provider's own current status before making a purchase.

Surfshark & others

Single-user signals

One contributor to the October 8 travel thread said Surfshark worked after returning from a trip. Other commenters named different services, with limited information about dates, devices or networks.

Limit: one positive report cannot establish repeatable performance or a ranking. Avoid a long subscription based on a single comment.

What we did not test: China Travel Decisions has not independently run these VPNs inside mainland China, measured their speeds, checked your hotel network or verified their current subscription terms. These four names are examples from sources, not a sponsored ranking.

Traveler using a mobile phone while planning connectivity for China
Plan the connection you will actually use. A working travel-data plan, local Wi-Fi and a VPN application are different things.

A two-minute connectivity checklist before your flight

  1. Name the three services you truly need. For example: Gmail for bookings, WhatsApp to contact family, and a laptop for work. Also plan apps that work on local networks, such as an offline map or translated hotel address.
  2. Choose the network first. On a compatible, unlocked phone, compare a travel eSIM and home roaming before shopping for an extra VPN. Check exact coverage, activation and app-access claims.
  3. If you plan to use a VPN, investigate it before departure. Check current provider guidance, device support, lawful use, support access and recent dated China-specific results. Connecting at home only tests your home connection, not operation inside China.
  4. Keep important account recovery offline. Download reservations, contacts, maps and confirmation numbers; know how to reach your hotel and bank without relying on one service.
  5. Test all devices once you have a lawful working connection. Phone Wi-Fi, cellular data and a tethered laptop can behave differently. Switch one thing at a time to find the cause of a failure.

When a travel eSIM may remove the need for a separate VPN

Some international travel eSIM products advertise access to overseas apps over their own mobile-data routing. For example, Nomad's August 2026 help-center guidance says its China eSIM can access services including Google, WhatsApp and Instagram without an external VPN. That is a provider claim about its product, not evidence that every eSIM or all roaming services work the same way. Check the product listing and the apps you require before purchasing.

This may solve the phone-data problem, but a traveler who relies on hotel Wi-Fi or needs steady laptop access still has a separate decision to make. The China eSIM checker compares data, app-access claims and local-number needs, while our China map guide offers an alternative when Google Maps is not available.

What to do when your connection fails after arriving

1. Identify the failure. Do all sites fail, or only Google/WhatsApp? If nothing loads, troubleshoot data allowance, roaming activation and signal before assuming a VPN problem.

2. Compare mobile data with Wi-Fi. If an international eSIM works but hotel Wi-Fi does not, that suggests different network routing or access restrictions rather than a broken account.

3. Verify the plan and app support. Use official customer support through a functioning connection. Do not install unknown profiles, APKs or paid “working node” offers from strangers.

4. Use your preplanned fallback. Offline booking details, a local map, your hotel front desk or an approved alternate network may be safer than repeated desperate account changes.

Do not rely on a blanket statement that every consumer VPN use is permitted or forbidden. UK government China travel advice says that China's cybersecurity laws require licensing of online products and services, including VPNs, and advises travelers to follow local law. The applicable position may depend on the product and intended use. This article does not provide legal clearance or technical circumvention instructions. If your work or travel depends on a specific connection method, obtain current advice from your organization and appropriate authorities before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Which VPN should a first-time tourist buy for China in October 2026?

There is not enough evidence to guarantee a winner. Astrill appears prominently in published Shanghai-based testing and in traveler reports; Proton has both favorable test results and contradictory traveler reports; LetsVPN and Surfshark have anecdotal October mentions. Check the most recent provider and independent information and your exact network needs. A suitable internationally routed eSIM or home-roaming plan may reduce your need for a separate VPN.

Does a China eSIM always bypass blocked apps?

No. That depends on the individual plan's routing, compatibility and current service; a device supporting eSIM is not sufficient by itself. Review the exact travel eSIM options and their up-to-date claims.

Does a VPN on my phone also cover hotel Wi-Fi and a laptop?

Not automatically. The phone's VPN state, hotspot behavior and laptop's separate network connection can differ. Plan and test each device on the connection it will actually use.

Can I download a VPN after arriving in China?

Availability of provider websites, app stores and payment methods can change. Research lawful device setup and account recovery before you travel instead of assuming all installers and support channels will be reachable after landing.

Will an overseas roaming plan always make Google and WhatsApp work?

No universal guarantee. Ask the home operator whether your China roaming package routes data internationally and supports the exact apps you need. Check data limits and charges, and keep a backup for accommodation Wi-Fi.
