12306 Payment Failed With a Foreign Card: What to Try Before You Lose the Seat
A payment error is not the same as a ticket failure. First identify whether 12306 created an order, whether your bank authorized money, and whether a ticket was actually issued.
Quick answer: 12306 officially supports payment with Chinese or foreign bank cards and mobile-payment apps after identity verification. If one payment path fails, do not assume foreigners cannot buy the train. First check whether an order exists and whether money was actually authorized. Then switch to another supported official payment route or buy at a station ticket office. If your bank already shows a debit or authorization but 12306 has not issued a ticket, stop repeated payment attempts until you reconcile the order state.
What exactly failed?
Choose the state you see right now
12306's supported-payment guidance includes foreign bank cards and mobile-payment apps. Check your issuer's international/e-commerce setting once, then try a different supported issuer or Alipay/WeChat if already set up. Do not keep retrying the same card if the bank starts showing pending authorizations.
The bank authentication layer failed, not necessarily 12306 eligibility.3-D Secure is controlled by the card issuer/payment rail. Check the bank app/SMS challenge, issuer international-commerce controls, and try another supported card from a different bank. If the order remains unissued, availability can change; do not assume the seat is permanently held.
Separate the wallet failure from the railway order.A linked overseas card can still fail in Alipay or WeChat for a specific transaction. Check whether 12306 shows an issued ticket. If not, use another official payment route; if you need to leave soon, a staffed station ticket office accepts foreign bank cards, RMB cash and mobile payments under the government visitor guide.
Stop and reconcile before paying again.Open 12306 My Orders and check whether a ticket is issued. Compare that with the bank/wallet status: success, pending authorization, reversed or failed. A bank-side pending debit is not proof that China Railway issued the ticket.
Use the official station fallback. The government guide states that station ticket offices can sell to foreign travelers using a passport and accept Chinese or foreign bank cards, RMB cash and mobile payment apps. Seat inventory can change, so go to the ticket office rather than repeatedly cycling the same failed online authorization.
What the official guidance actually confirms
| Question | Confirmed answer | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Can foreigners buy on 12306? | Yes, after identity verification using an accepted passport route. | That every account/card will clear every risk check. |
| Can a foreign bank card pay online? | Yes. The State Council visitor guide explicitly lists Chinese or foreign bank cards and mobile-payment apps. | That one specific Visa/Mastercard issuer will approve the transaction. |
| Can I pay at a station ticket office? | Yes: foreign bank card, RMB cash or mobile payment are listed official options. | That the same seat will still be available after an online failure. |
| What proves I have a ticket? | An issued order/ticket in the official railway system. | A bank authorization, wallet screenshot or failed checkout page by itself. |

Use this recovery sequence
- Check ticket issuance first. Open 12306 → My Orders. If a valid ticket is already issued, do not buy again just because an email is missing.
- Check the payment layer. Bank/card: declined, pending, reversed or completed? Wallet: failed, processing or successful?
- If no money moved and no ticket exists: try one alternative supported route — another bank card or mobile wallet.
- If authentication failed: complete the issuer's legitimate bank verification or switch issuers. Do not share OTP codes with a stranger claiming to “help 12306”.
- If money moved but no ticket exists: pause. Save masked transaction details and the 12306 order state before retrying.
- If departure is near: use the station ticket office with the original passport and a supported payment fallback.
Bank charged, but 12306 shows no issued ticket
Do not create a duplicate problem
- Record the time, amount and masked transaction identifier.
- Check 12306 My Orders, not just email or SMS.
- Check whether the bank amount is pending authorization versus fully posted.
- If the railway order is not issued, use official 12306 support or your card issuer to reconcile the payment state.
- Only make a second purchase once you understand whether the first payment can settle into a real ticket.
For refunds from completed 12306 ticket changes/refunds, the railway FAQ says the money is returned to the original online payment method under the applicable rules. That refund rule is not proof that every failed authorization will post as a completed railway charge.
Station-ticket fallback for foreign travelers
Bring the original passport you will travel with. Ask for the train by date, origin, destination and preferred departure time. If one bank card is the reason you went to the counter, carry a second independent method where possible.

Frequently asked questions
Does 12306 accept Visa or Mastercard?
Official visitor guidance confirms foreign bank cards are accepted as an online 12306 payment category. It does not promise approval by every card issuer or every transaction-authentication flow.
Will a failed payment keep my seat?
Do not assume a fixed hold period unless your live 12306 order explicitly shows it. If no ticket is issued, seat availability can change.
Should I switch to Trip.com after one failure?
It is an option, but first confirm the original 12306 payment/order did not issue a ticket or create a charge. CTD also has a separate guide for Trip.com issuance failure.
