China 240-Hour Transit With Extra Layovers: How to Check Your Flight Route

Quick decision · Checked October 12, 2026

Multiple connections outside China do not by themselves answer eligibility. Check the countries or regions surrounding your mainland-China entry and exit, the exact confirmed tickets and the nationality and port rules; request operator confirmation for ambiguous round-trip records.

The official condition, not a one-line itinerary hack

Under the NIA’s 2026 description, eligible ordinary-passport holders must transit through China to a third country or region, enter through a designated port and hold a confirmed onward ticket. The rule does not say that any ticket whose first and last city match is automatically approved, nor does it guarantee that a carrier will interpret a complex one-ticket itinerary in your favor.

The immediately surrounding foreign connections are relevant evidence, but present your entire itinerary to the airline or immigration authorities when there is doubt.

Work through the Bali → Singapore → Guangzhou → HCMC → Bali example

Draw the itinerary as individual legs:

Leg Meaning for document check
Bali → Singapore Separate international connection before China
Singapore → Guangzhou Flight actually entering mainland China
Guangzhou → Ho Chi Minh City Flight actually departing mainland China, with confirmed date/seat required
Ho Chi Minh City → Bali Following connection after leaving mainland China

Singapore and Vietnam are distinct countries surrounding the China stop. That supports the proposed transit interpretation but does not prove approval: the airline may review the ticket as a Bali-originating round trip, and the NIA’s short published wording does not adjudicate this exact combination.

Check a booking with one PNR or two tickets

Save the flight coupons or individual flight legs, not only a receipt showing Bali–Bali. Ask your airline, before departure, which ticket view its check-in agent will use to verify your Mainland China transit entitlement. A through-ticket and separately issued tickets can raise different operational questions about checked bags or onward documentation.

For a high-stakes journey, ask the nearest competent Chinese visa/immigration authority to assess the exact route rather than accepting anonymous online assurances.

Checklist at the origin airport

Carry the original passport, flight confirmations showing Singapore → Guangzhou and Guangzhou → Ho Chi Minh City, all connecting flights, accommodation in Guangzhou and an explanation of why the mainland segment is a transit. The onward flight needs its confirmed date and seat. Check the 57-nationality/65-port list effective August 2026 for your specific passport.

I am not relying on the Bali–Bali summary. Here are the confirmed flight segments surrounding my mainland-China entry: Singapore to Guangzhou and Guangzhou to Ho Chi Minh City. Could you verify whether this booking satisfies your 240-hour transit document check?

If airline staff disagrees

Ask for a supervisor or a specialist document check, present the dated NIA page and the segmented e-ticket, and seek a written explanation of the missing condition where possible. Do not promise that the airline must board you. Re-ticketing to a clearly different onward destination, changing the itinerary, or securing a visa are fallback decisions to consider before travel, not remedies guaranteed at the gate.

Frequently asked questions

Do layovers outside China count as visiting extra countries?

A connection is part of your overall journey, but whether it resolves a particular transit eligibility question depends on the exact inbound/outbound mainland segments and authorities’ assessment.

What if my PNR starts and ends in Bali?

Show the individual segments and obtain airline/document-check confirmation; do not assume a round-trip display settles eligibility either way.

Does this apply to 24-hour airport airside transit?

No. That is a separate policy with different movement conditions.
