Does Mastercard Work in China? Alipay, WeChat Pay, POS & Metro
An overseas Mastercard is a valid China payment starting point. The real question is which payment channel you are using — wallet QR, merchant POS or metro gate — and what your issuer allows.
Quick answer: You generally do not need to open a Visa card just because you are traveling to China. Official visitor-payment guidance supports overseas Mastercard for mobile-wallet linking, and Mastercard can also work at participating POS terminals and supported metro gates. But “Mastercard works in China” does not mean every merchant, QR transaction or issuer authorization will succeed.
Where are you trying to use Mastercard?
Choose the payment situation
Link the card in the official Alipay or WeChat app, complete any issuer verification, then pay by scanning the merchant QR or showing your payment code. A successful link does not guarantee every merchant transaction.
Look for the Mastercard logo at the terminal.Direct POS acceptance is merchant-specific. Hotels, malls and larger tourist-facing merchants are more likely to have compatible terminals than small QR-only vendors.
Do not assume you need Alipay.Beijing and Shanghai support eligible Mastercard contactless cards at metro gates. Use the city-specific rules and keep a staffed-ticket fallback.
Treat “linked” and “authorized” as separate states.Check the exact app error and your issuing bank. Then try a different payment channel or a card from a different bank. Repeatedly re-binding the same blocked issuer is not a robust backup.
What Mastercard can do — by channel
| Channel | Can Mastercard work? | What must be true | Best fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alipay QR | Yes, eligible overseas Mastercard supported | Card linked + app/issuer approves the transaction | WeChat Pay, POS, second card, cash |
| WeChat Pay QR | Yes, eligible overseas Mastercard supported | Card linked + identity/issuer checks satisfied | Alipay, POS, second card, cash |
| Merchant POS | At participating terminals | Mastercard logo/network supported by that terminal | Wallet QR or cash |
| Beijing metro | Yes, supported contactless network | Eligible contactless card/device + issuer approval | Ticket counter / machine |
| Shanghai metro | Yes, eligible contactless Mastercard | Contactless technical compatibility + issuer approval | Station service center |
| Cash withdrawal | Often at compatible ATMs | ATM shows supported network + issuer permits withdrawal | Another ATM/network/card |

Current wallet limits and the ¥200 fee threshold
Shanghai's official September 2026 overseas-card guide publishes these parameters for eligible overseas cards linked to Alipay or Weixin Pay:
| Item | Official guidance | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Single transaction | Up to USD 5,000 equivalent | Check your own app/account limit before a large hotel or ticket payment |
| Annual cumulative | Up to USD 50,000 equivalent | Relevant mainly to longer stays or high spend |
| Transaction ≤ CNY 200 | Generally platform service-fee exempt | Check the payment screen |
| Transaction > CNY 200 | May incur 3% of the full transaction amount | Compare POS/direct-card alternatives for larger purchases |
The official page says to check the app for actual limits and promotional fee exemptions. Do not assume every account receives identical treatment.
Five-minute pre-trip setup
- Install the official Alipay and/or WeChat app from your normal app store.
- Register with your own phone number and complete legitimate identity prompts.
- Add the Mastercard and complete the issuing bank's verification.
- If you have another card from a different bank, add or carry it as a true independent backup.
- Keep access to some RMB cash for small vendors or temporary network/app failures.
If Mastercard fails in China: diagnose the layer
- Wallet cannot bind card: read the issuer/app error; verify name/card data; try another issuer.
- Wallet bound, merchant QR fails: ask for a POS terminal, switch wallet, or use backup card/cash.
- POS declines: check issuer international controls; use mobile wallet or another card.
- Metro tap fails: buy a staffed single-journey ticket and troubleshoot later.
- You need an independent store of value: official Shanghai guidance says an e-CNY wallet can be topped up with Visa or Mastercard, subject to app eligibility.

This overseas Mastercard was declined. Can I pay by Alipay/WeChat QR instead, or use a POS terminal that accepts Mastercard?
Frequently asked questions
Should I get a Visa before China if I only own Mastercard?
Not solely because of the logo. Current official guidance supports Mastercard across the main international-card wallet setup. A second card from a different issuer can still be valuable as redundancy.
Does “card linked successfully” mean it will work everywhere?
No. Merchant acceptance and issuer authorization happen later.
Can I use Mastercard without Alipay or WeChat?
At participating POS terminals, yes; and eligible contactless Mastercard works directly on supported metro systems such as Beijing and Shanghai.
